Did Frank tell Donnie to leave his room just before the engine came down??!! My opinion is that because we didn't see Frank until Donnie had left his room, Frank wasn't actually telling him to leave, but Donnie left because he knew what was going to happen because of his fourth dimension powers (he knew it atleast sub-conciously) of some sought (read the Cellar Door book, about what powers the Living Reciever has). It was only once Donnie had survived that Frank appeared (he saw him for the first time on the golf course once he left his house). It still spins me out when i think about it. teitzo nikana_86@hotmail.com

Then why do we hear Frank saying 'Wake up, Donnie' etc, and see Donnie seem to respond to that by getting out of bed? I agree the fact that they are communicating 'psychically' over a large distance is down, in no small part, to Donnie's abilities - but Frank's influence in getting Donnie to leave his bed is pretty undeniable IMO.

Donnie was a sleepwalker anyway, so for all we know, he would've been out of bed anyway, and Frank just talked to him to gain his trust.

I don't know what kinds there are... ...but when I was 5 we moved house, and it turned out that I'd been sleepwalking to the toilet for years. We found that out when my mum found me urinating against the wall where the toilet would have been in the old house!
True story.

In adolescence I was a wide-roaming sleepwalker. I'd often take my bedding with me to far-flung parts of the house. On a couple of notable occasions, I even went outside, including once when I roused the neighbors down the street to ask them if they knew "where my black shoes" were!

Donnie says the first time he is hypnotised that he must obey frank because he saved donnies life. Therefore, did he leave of his own accord?

Is it just me or is frank (not the bunny from the future) trying to wake Donnie at the end when he is laughing in his bed? At the start frank beeps his car horn and drives away but at the end he beeps and doesnt drive away. Is he trying to warn him? Does Donnie have to die?

is frank trying to wake Donnie at the end? frank beeps his car horn ... is he trying to warn him? Does Donnie have to die? Frank's beeping at the end has generated some discussion. It's generally accepted that Frank-the-teenager has some memory of the TU and is beeping to warn Donnie to get out of the way of the falling engine; but there are other opinions, too. Check some of these threads: darkomovie.proboards24.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=psych&thread=1069002456&page=3darkomovie.proboards24.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=disc&thread=1067979994&page=7As to whether Donnie had to die: that's probably the debate most central to understanding the movie. It's conversation that's going on all over the forum and has been since this site got started. There are a number of posts within this section ("What's up with that ending?") wherein you'll find reams of discussion. I'd suggest reading those and posting your perspective, too.

I think Frank is Donnie. His voice and presence exists only in his head. It's his alter-ego.The super hero part of him. So,he saves his own self.At least the first time..

Thanks MD! Every time Frank appears Donnie is either asleep, half asleep, hypnotized or in a trance. All the above suggest that when Donnie's subconscious "wakes up",Frank also appears. As a word "frank' doesn't mean 'honest'?I don't believe this is by chance.Frank symbolizes Donnie's dark avenger persona, who wakes up at nights and tears the world apart in order to reveal and punish the hypocrisy of the world around him.

It's a very nice idea. You could also say that in all of those states he would be far more suggestible - so whether Frank is internal or external of Donnie, I agree that his influence is unable (or less able) to penetrate Donnie's conscious mind.
NB Frank="Honest" or "TRUTH", may also support the interpretation that Frank imparts the word/will of God. (Not my view btw, but it fits nicely). Or it could simply be another layer of manipulation - the unconscoius suggestion that Frank is frank (honest) may make Donnie more likely to follw his instruction.

If his whole experience in the TU is something like a dream it is safe to assume that Donnie as himself in that universe represents his repressed and fearful self and the Frank part of him represents his primal urges, natural gifts and sense of destiny. We could assume also that each and everyone he meets and interacts with,is no one else but himself again. So following that line of thinking Roberta Sparrow represents his fears for ending up like her, crazy and alone,Monitoff his scientific knowledge,Cherrita his feelings of not belonging,Gretchen his yearning to be loved,Dr Thurman his rational self and so on..
