It's been established (in one of the commentaries) that the 'Wake Up' sequence is not in real time; that is the minute or so of filme between Frank driving away and appearing in his bedroom actually represents 20-30 mins; so he had plenty of time to get from Donnie's to his own home.
And if I heard a huge crash behind me I'd drive faster to get out of the way, rather than stop and risk getting caught up in it!

well weather or not he would have stoped is a character preferance and we do not know alot about frank the boyfriend so thats a toss up and as far as it represinting 20-30 minutes i disagree because frank drives away right after he drops off donnies sister and as she slide down the door the engine hit (or because of but the happened within seconds of eachother) so that i disagree with

We see the drop off/crash, and then everyone waking up/remembering. We see Frank LAST in that sequence. The whole drop/crash/wake sequence represents 20-30 mins.
It's described as such in the DC commentary.

From the way all this is explained I can gather that if Frank wasn't such a dick, he would've left Donnie alone to sleep and die. Instead he woke him up, made him fall in love, made him burn a house down, made him experience the loss of a loved one, and made him a murderer.
What a dick.
(I joke my new friends, I understand the movie is much deeper)

I think if Donnie was leaving his room at his own will or coincidentally he didn't realise it. Donnie himself believes Frank made him leave his room so that he didn't die because in therapy whilst hypnotised he says "I have to obey him, he saved my life" or something like that referring to the fact that Frank made Donnie leave his room before the jet engine fell in.
