I'm dreadfully sorry if this has been asked before, I did a search and didn't find anything (I know how angry you people get! Zounds!). The ending in the Director's Cut when the movie was going backwards and PURGE was written all over the screen was just a taaad confusing. I've heard a few theories from friends, and tried to come up with a few of my own, to no avail. The best I can come up with (and feel no guilt in throwing this back in my face): 1. There is a higher power watching over the events in this movie and have intervened with the way of things. That would explain the computer stuff, and it all going backwards. Kinda. Actually, kinda not. 2. Someone in the future from in the story is reviewing the events that happened with a time machine or whatnot, and is trying to mess it up. Again, pretty stupid. 3. Okay, so I don't have a third explanation. To put it quite frankly I'm at a loss. This is the only thing I'm seeming to have trouble with understanding the story, and believe you me, it's a major blow to the ego to ask such a silly question . If any of you have any ideas, hard proof or not, I'd be glad to hear them. Thanks.

Actually, kinda not. This could be a possible explanation, as it ties in with the Graham Green references in the film aswell. But basically i think it was just showing what was happening between the two universes, with the TU collapsing and everything going back to the PU

It's all to do with the 'future scientists' explanation.
In a nutshell - future scientists fuck up and damage spacetime creating the TU. The only way to fix it is to return an artifact blah blah... Living reciever blah blah... Manipulated dead blah blah.... etc. Point is it is thier influence rather than God driving Frank and imbuing powers on Donnie - and all to fix what they broke in the first place. The whole TV screens with PURGE is what they see back in mission control.
If you do a search for 'future scientists' you'll find plenty of stuff.

BigBoy is right, pretty much. I say "pretty much" because I don't know if the future scientists are the ones who screwed things up, but yeah...the original script called for a more explicit rendering of a future group of people manipulating events and so on...also Kelly's original script had a time-ship hovering over Donnie's house at the end...this (these) were the literal deus ex machina. The original release leaves room for God's intervention, while the DC is more explicit in that its directly future beings...but if God is in control...then they're under His power...so we're back to free will v. destiny again...needless to say, I would love to see Darko as a novel or a book with all the script versions and annotations...would probably be a heady read. Peace out.

actually pax it's not neccessarily future sceintists or anything like that... if there are they could just be watching.. but also what if (if there is indeed a god) that's how God sees things? honestly it's impossible to say my opinion is wrong until you die, and by then you wont be doing much typing.. but theres a book thats a good read (shameless plug for my favorite author) called Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus by Orson Scott Card that deals with a future scientist type theory.. Read it or suffer missing out

The celebrations (fireworks, cheering) don't really tie in with future observers. If these people are just tuning in to some past event, then they already know nothing universally cataclysmic occurred - so would the resolution of the TU be a cause for such fervant celebration? If, however they cause the whole thing and are trying to fix it, then events in the TU are unfolding concurrently with them, and the celebrations make sense. As for God being the 'Big Techie in the Sky' - sure! Why not?

Okay, so how does ROBERTA SPARROW(grandma death) figure into all this. When it was God behind all this I merely saw her as a prophet, guiding Donnie. Now that this "future society" thing has been added, I dont know where she came up with this..any theories?

One theory is that RS went through a similar experience to Donnie as a Living Reciever and somehow avoided (or was not confionted with) death upon returning to the PU.

I think the forces manipulating Donnie, Frank, everyone is something akin to the same kind of forces present at the end of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. Basically, an intelligence so adanced(possiby from the future, maybe even a different plane of existence) that their technology appears as if magic and they are trying to NUDGE humanity along, to make sure it doesnt destroy itself. Now in the commentary on the directors cut, the Director does say that the future scientist are ONE interpetation, but he also alluded to a higher power, and Donnie going on a spirtual journey, which would be GOD I suppose. So basically, I thing he wants us to be Donnie, and make ups our own minds about what happened.

Re. Roberta sparrow, i agree that she has been through the whole LR experience before donnie but i think that rather than choosing to die ((like donnie) she decided not to (i am aware that this doesnt explain how her TU was brought back to the PU). She somehow knows that the whole series of events will reoccur and thats why she writes POTT, for the next LR (donnie) to read and figure out what he's got to do. RS knows that the next LR will try and contact her and because she chose to defy the whole death thing, she is condemmed to a life of walking backwards and forwards to her letter box, waiting for donnies letter.
Thats what i think neway (inspired by a thought my ex girlfriend had after watching the film once. She thinks shes figured out the whole thing!!... shes just wrong... the little elves inside her head are going to come out of her ear en mass n eat her!!)

Hi Dunk -- a good synopsis of a pretty well-worn theory 'round these parts. If you search for "Roberta Sparrow" you'll turn up a couple pretty extensive discussions of how the theory of her previous LR experience can be integrated into the movie as it's generally interpreted.

Alright, well why would the "future scientists" create the tangent universe in the first place? What did they mess up to start this whole process? Is it simply the universe collapsing on itself? I should probably listen to the DC commentary, eh?

They didnt create the TU. The TU was created as a result of them looking in the past at people. Somehow they corrupted the time line unintentionally which caused the creation of the TU

What did they mess up to start this whole process? Phil has it right, above. What I would encourage us to remember is this is yet one more "possible interpretation" offered up by Kelly in his usual I-don't-want-to-alienate-anyone-with-a-different-read ambiguity. So, yes, I think the commentary is definitely a must-listen if you're interested in exploring Darko to its fullest, I wouldn't feel as though you're missing out on the "real" answer if you don't feel warm and fuzzy about the future scientists idea. All that said, I do feel all the anectdotal evidence points to this interpretation as the one Kelly finds most satisfying personally. He's said he wanted to write a sci-fi/superhero movie from the start, and despite all his self-contradictions, for some reason when he's talked about that read, it's always sounded most honest from him. Totally just my intuition ...
