It's Looping. Go back to the talk with his physics teacher, If we can see the future we can change it and the consequences of the future change. Therefore donnie obviusly sees that he can make a choice and the consequenses that come with it. But in making a decision he changes time. So therefore in some space and time there is a donnie that made a choice of leaving the house and falling into the "devil's trap" allowing him to be subjected to his fears. In a tangent universe there is a Donnie who then realises he is chosen that he must not fall in the trap, because of the consequences it has, and accepts death.

This is a popular interpretation, Space and Time, and there's nothing "wrong" with it. What you'll see most of us point out regarding the loop/time-travel interpretation is that it seems to ignore a chunk of critical information -- namely, the Living Receiver process outlined in The Philosophy of Time Travel.
