Oh, and I also believe that as soon as the Artifact and Donnie went back to October 2, the Tangent Universe ended, and therefore those events were totally cancelled. His sister and mom and everyone on the plane didn't die, because there was no plane to crash anymore. That universe came to a dead end, and since everyone on the plane also still existed in the Primary Universe, they didn't die. They went back to their Primary existences with no memory of the T.U., since it never happened.
Unless they dream about it.

I think the movie is mainly about there being a God and Donnie realizing this.
It is said that there are at least 11 dimensions (perhaps more) and God obviously has the ability to be in all of them. We exist in 4 dimensions, time being the 4th but we have the ability to be in extra dimensions when God lets us or actually, when we accept the idea and God then shows us these extra dimensions.
The idea of a tangent universe or say a "5th" dimenison in the movie makes sense. In this dimension who knows how things could be since we can't really comprehend the existence of extra dimensions. I mean, we can look at them from our 4 dimensional POV and apply our laws that we follow (line of time, gravity, etc) but we have no idea how it would be. Another thing with extra dimensions is that they can work on a diff time dimension than what we have and an extra time dimension can be set so you can see everything that happens on our timeline and could interject at any point on our timeline both in past present or future. Basically, if you existed in another dimension that does not follow the laws of our 4 dimensions it could be possible for you to go into the future or go back in time if you wanted to. Theoretically, if you are outside of our timeline you could see what happened the day our world (even universe)started to the day it ends.
So lets take that thinking and put it to this movie. The whole tangent universe could simply be another dimension that Donnie somehow becomes aware of right before he is about to die. What would be the purpose? Who knows...maybe it was to teach Donnie about love and sacrifice and to show him that God does exist and to not be afraid of dying in our 4 dimensional world. For all we know, maybe every person experiences this extra dimenison right before they die and it could be possible on a timewise basis because remember, extra dimensions don't work on the same time dimension we have so 28 days in the extra dimensions could be mere seconds in our time dimension/timeline. Or, maybe the extra dimension Donnie experienced was simply to save a screwup that was going to mess our 4 dimensional world up which would bring it to an end....I don't know.
I think the thing with Frank showing up (this is Frank from the extra dimenison who was shot by Donnie and who again can travel to any point on our timeline so it makes sense he can show up already being shot by Donnie before Donnie shoots him) to Donnie could be explained then with this new timeline and dimension. Frank from the extra dimension shows up to Donnie right before he is going to die and that brings Donnie into this extra dimension where Donnie can learn some things about life (love, compassion, etc) and see cause and effect in action. The main thing he learns though is that there is a God and God does have control over us but allows us free will to some extent and also God is there to take care of us after we die in our current physical state. After Donnie learns everything he needs to learn (specifically about love and sacrifice) he is able to go back to his "real life" (our 4 dimenisons) via the "wormhole" and die but realizing that there is a God and that his death in this world is not the end.
I think that theory can also explain some of the stuff like the world ending, etc. That could just be the end of Donnie's exploration of the 5th/6th/whatever dimenison (our tangent universe) rather than the end of the universe. Or, maybe we all go to our own individual dimenison/tangent universe before we die so they all do end. Who knows.
I mean, I think the movie is basically whatever one choooses it to be so there is no right/wrong explanation. I do feel though the main point (as stated above) is that there is a God and Donnie comes to realize this.

i can agree with that, i do think the main point is pretty much that. and that kinda answers my question but i still want others thoughts on this:
ok i pretty much get everything, except how the portal/wormhole/whatever its called gets closed by his death. ok so he gets out of bed and it collapses 28 days later. well whats the diff if he stayed in bed in died? yeah i know all the personal things that dont happen cuz of his death, but i mean how does his death change if the portle closes or not? is it because he controled it and sinces hes dead it cant stay open? please someone give me some thoughts

I don't know what I was thinking when I wrote that.... Im pretty sure Donnie did know he was The Living Receiver. He had the book. His intentions just seem more simple than that. Despite all the other stories in this movie, I see it as mostly a love story. Donnie's happiness in the end is because he knows he is making others lives better, especially Gretchen's. It's just one of the most bizarre and intricate love stories around. Love it. I want the directors cut DVD now!

The Tangent Universe is created by the fact that Donnie doesn’t die, not the presence of the Artifact. “Artifacts provide the first sign that a tangent universe has occurred,” they are not the cause themselves. The Living Receiver does not end the Tangent Universe by sending back the Artifact, that is just one of his tasks. The Philosophy of Time Travel says, “the only physical evidence buried within the Artifact itself, all that remains from the lost world.” This makes it appear that the Artifact is from the Tangent Universe, and is supposed to stay in the Primary Universe. In the commentary it is stated that all time travel movies have some item as proof that the time travel had actually occurred. “The Living Receiver is chosen to guide the Artifact into position for its journey back to the Primary Universe.” By pulling the engine from the plane in the Tangent Universe, Donnie is returning the Artifact to the Primary Universe, at the same time making sure the Tangent Universe never opened in the first place by killing himself, and making the universe stable again. That would explain why the plane in the Primary Universe still had its engine (official website). To the question: Why does Frank wake up Donnie if that creates the Tangent Universe? If Frank hadn’t woken him, Donnie might have left his room in the middle of the night on October 2 on his own, thus not dying, and creating the tangent universe anyway. After all, he had been sleepwalking before he ever met Frank. So maybe the reason Frank “manipulated” him was to show him what would happen if he did not die. From this Donnie decides to stay in his room to close the tangent universe by killing himself, whether he needed to or not, though I think he needed to die. The 28 days he had in the Tangent Universe gives him the knowledge that everything happens for a reason, he won’t die alone, etc. It also enables him to make the portal the engine came through and gives him a reason to do so, saving the world, and/or his loved ones. That would explain why Frank saved him if that created the tangent universe in the first place. I’m sure there are flaws in this theory, but does this make even a little sense?

yep--Donnie died for a reason in other words. If Frank didn't save him the first time Donnie would still be dead.

"so donnie kills frank frank kills gretchin and frank saves donnie but kills him at the same time"
In the original primary universe timeline, Frank runs over Gretchen, and Donnie shoots Frank. In the tangent universe, dead Frank and the manipulated living ensure that Gretchen is run over by alive Frank again (because the plane engine from the primary universe altered the timeline), so Donnie dreams about it, and dies knowing that he is saving Gretchen (and also Frank).

erm theres no proof that primary universe timeline was any similar to what happens in tangent universe

erm theres no proof that primary universe timeline was any similar to what happens in tangent universe If you're talking about the original primary universe timeline, and you assume that the MD Frank is from that universe (because the ML Frank a part of the tangent universe), then yes, there is. When MD Frank takes the top of his bunny suit off, he reveals a gunshot wound to his eye, and he tells Donnie that he's sorry. If MD Frank's actions all lead up to Gretchen's death, this suggests that MD Frank was supposed to make Donnie dream about Gretchen's death before he died. One possible explanation for this is that if Donnie wasn't killed by the plane engine in the primary universe, he could go on to go out with Gretchen, and Frank would run over her a second time in the primary universe. Therefore, his death is a sacrifice, but he had to know that is was through dream. This way, he was not longer afraid of dying alone, and was happy when he died.
