my views on donnie darko stem a little away from some of the ones i've read. here's a few points i have to contradict ...someone said donnie never see frank except in his sleep this is disproven by two scens the one with the knife and the one where donnie is talking to frank and his sister interupts him. my theory about cunningham crying at the ending is that .... it's unreltated to darko at all he is a perdophile being torn apart inside by the feelings of guilt. i read on the website that he kills himself. also on the website was something about wylie charachter being ex cia .... odd why would one become a teacher after being in cia? leads to a larger question about him and barrymores charcter conversation about darko... my theory about frank is he died and his really trying to prevent his own death for now he knows the plan this goes along with time travel if we were to die we could exist outside of time. the end of the world........... i really dont understand that scene for some reason though. i mean if you look at it closely i think that it's over donnie's house so maybe there never was an end but he was seeing his own death. approaching

The end of the movie itself is simple...a worm hole opens up above his house...simply a coincidence that this warmhole opened up there instead of anywhere else...through that warm hole travels the plane engine from his mom and sisters plane. The idea behind the movie is that : IF you can see the path you are destined to take, you can change it. i.e. ... Donnie realizes that if he survies the engine crashing into his house, he floods the school, meets the girl, burns Cunninghams house, (cunningham is then revealed as a kitty porn ring operator) ....becuase cunningham is busted, Donnie's mom has to bring the dance team to the competition instead of the other woman, who is staying behind to help fight cunninghams case. Well his mother and sister is away, his girlfriend is hit by a car (within another incident that isnt important in this path of summarization) and is killed. His mother and sister die in a plane crash when the engine of their plane falls off. BUT the engine to that plane falls into a worm hole and crashes into Donnie's house, 28 days previous. SO the ending of the movie simply offers you another alternative. Donnie never left his bed on October second, was killed when the engine struck his house, never flooded the school, never met the girl, never burnt th perverts house, mother never had to take the girls to the dance competition. DONE. Sure, their are dozens of other connections you could make...but i have to go eat dinner...

Good observation Drew..........i had the same but there is one thing that's wrong here, even if the mother does not leave on the trip...the plane is still going to fall through the loop hole...(that's how he dies at the end) so i'm guessing he's dancing sister is still going to die, it's his mother that lives. but what's important is...how can he change the future by dieing if the plane wing still falls through the loop hole??? yes the lives of all the people he effected will change but after 28 days......shouldn't time repeat itself once again? (for the plane wing STILL fell through the loop hole? any one wanna try and explain this?

The town wont continue to repeat itself every 28 days. Donnie did what he had to and now it's over. His sister wont die in the plane for two reasons. 1. he's the one that ripped the "Artifact" off the plane. 2. Even if he didn't, his sister would be mourning to much to compete in any competition.

I thought something about that too about Donnie's sis would still die in the plane crash if Donnie died. But my girlfriend picked up on this that they actually probably wouldn't. The only reason they were on that flight was because it was the earliest flight back and Mom was worried about Donnie and hurried to get home. Remember the last conversation they had right before she left, where she saw his Frank drawing and was practically crying.
Had this not been the case, I doubt there would've been this huge rush to get home and they would've been on a different flight.

Perhaps Im'm confused......if donnie died on october 2nd then Jim Cunningham wouldve never been exposed and Ms. Walker (Kitty) would have been able to take the team to the competition and yes they wouldve probably been on a different flight..... ;D

Jim would be drastically changed afterwards cause it took that "dream" for him to realize how hipicritical he is. Kitty realizes she's been following this fool around who act's like the massiah, and the plane wouldn't crash in the first place(with donnie dead).

and it's entirely probable that in the normal timeline, where donnie dies, no plane ever lost an engine at all - that the wormhole carried the engine from the unstable tangent universe.
The website has the transcript to the phone call where the investigators determine it's an exact copy of an existing airplane engine. They make no mention of the engine falling off the plane at some point.
The universe/timeline splits and on the tangent timeline, an engine falls off an airplane crashing into a house. this timeline is unstable and ends up only existing for about 4 weeks. being a colossally messed up place, time doesn't necessarily behave as it's supposed to, and it seems perfectly possible that the timeline would come back to the point at which it began before closing or collapsing.
Thus, there were two possible means for the tangent universe to resolve itself: Either Donnie dies with the jet engine crash and, according to Sparrow's book, the resolution has been met, or Donnie survives again, possibly with everyone's knowledge that this has happened before, but the tangent universe eventually DOES collapse and this particular world ends as Frank predicted. We might be able to infer that it already HAS repeated itself, at least once, since ghost Frank is already there, already injured, and knowingly or not, pushing Donnie towards the proper resolution.

this is my theories I dont belive that the world ending is more than HIS world ending. I base this on "grandma-death" the same thing had obviously happened to her excpet she must have had a longer period as she had time to become a teacher of science. If you notice she has no family, and donnies father says something about her living up there on her own and that she was mad (this is based on when he was a child) What im saying is donnies world will end as the people he loves will die. Frank goes back in time (he says that the dead can dodge around time) to apologise to donnie (he randomly says sorry for no reason in the cinema) and to give him a chance to save himself and all his loved ones. Frank starts to make him do things that will ulitmatly lead to the ending in which he realises that he must die to save them. This is why he laughs at the end, hes realised that his whole life was to destroy everyone and his theory of time (travelling along gods path and if you could see your path, then you could change that path aslong as its gods intention) was right. The fact he talks about God maybe suggests that the dead frank was sent back to show him his path of time and that all the people he touches, paths were to set up donnies decision. This would also be responsible for the time lapse that puts the plane engine into donnies room. i am kind of contradicting myslef by saying he needed to die to save everyone because frank would have also been sent back to safe him. BUT i belive the 28 days were to teach donnie what his actions can cause and that he has loved. Although saying all this, Grandma death and the book could have just been God creating them for donnie as if she didnt walk backwards and forwards then franks car wouldnt have swerved away and hit donnies girlfriend. So i do belive that if donnie hadnt died he would have gone mad and his destiny would be for this too happen to someone else, maybe this is another thing he realises in the end and another theory why he was laughing! thanks for reading anyways... If Donnie's world had not ended, the whole world.. for everyone... would have ceased to exist - according to Sparrow's time travel theories. I don't think Donnie understood that he was saving the Universe. He only thought he was saving Gretchen (and, therefore, Frank). It was simply an act of love for Gretchen. He found a way to make the darkness into something good, even if it meant his own death.

Couldn't Donnie have technically ended the Tangent Universe whenever he wanted? Frank just knew that it would take Donnie 28 days etc. to figure it out...? Did Donnie realize that he was the Living Receiver? Because if he did, he would have realized that he was doing more than just saving Gretchen.
I think that when Donnie saw the sky open up, he realized more fully what was going on. He followed the smoke-stream to the portal, saw the plane, and knew that THAT was the jet engine. If he knew he was the Living Receiver, he knew he had the power to go back with the Artifact and prevent the Tangent Universe.
One thing I hadn't understood but now do from reading these threads is Gretchen's "go back and make things more beautiful" idea. Donnie's death would have been "dark," but by going through the 28 days and seeing the results of his continued life, he sees that the death would be "beautiful" as it saved two others, Gretchen and Frank.
This movie makes my head hurt. I love it.
