sufjan stevens, composer of arguably the most lovely and tender song about a serial killer yet written.

That song was on his myspace. Now the only song is Silent Night. John Wayne Gacy He sings "And in my best behavior I am really just like him Look beneath the floorboards for the secrets I have hid'
I really love the song Casimir Pulaski Day...it's about a girlfriend (i think) who was dying and died of cancer... I haven't had time to really listen to the words of his other stuff but it all sounds very good.

Yeah, Sufjan's great. I was gonna go to his show, but I saw the Polyphonic Spree instead.
I kind of regret not going.

yes, "Casimir Pulaski Day" is another sweet one, sadly so. (he's kind of vague about the gender; check out the lyrics to "The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out To Get Us!" for some other clues, unless he's assuming the voice of another.)
is he seriously working on albums for all 50 states?

hmmmm... I hadn't read the WASP lyrics and now it makes me think of what WASP stands for more than anything. White Anglo Saxon Protestant
I feel as though wearing leg warmers he is assuming the voice of a girl in the WASP one and in Casimir Pulaski because he 'almost touched your blouse' that he is talking about a girl dying.
You are right tho and I like that he is a bit ambiguous. It means the songs could reach out to more people and find them wherever they may be.
That reminds me of a Dar Williams song...The Mercy of the Fallen a song about how the best friends are the ones 'who say they have no claim to know what's right 'Sufjan seems to be religious a bit but of the gospel of inclusion rather the gospel of exclusion and my mind is taking me even further to a This American Life where the theme was about heretics.
There was a black preacher who was kind of an apprentice of Oral Roberts and they were very close. Oral helped him set up his church and pretty much treated him as he would his own son. But 'Jesus or God" came to the preacher and told him that he needed to preach the gospel of inclusion. Accepting everyone...gays and other so called sinners. He was labeled a heretic and shunned by Oral. One thing that he said at the end of the show struck me.... he was talking about how his congregation had dwindled to a mere 200 or so..and he pointed out that is is much easier to pack people in when you are preaching fire and brimstone and hell and damnation. :-)
I don't know how the heck I got there but there you are... :-)
I had to pick up his Songs for Christmas CD and I am loving it so far...there are so many discs and so many songs on those discs.
I also am listening to some Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem stuff... Irish songs that make me smile because of lyrics such as these
"Even a cripple forgets his hunch when he's snug outside of a jug of punch too ra loo ra loo too ra loo ra lay"
my two cents...spend them wisely

brilliant! i completely missed that one! yeah, deft handling of words invites many of the "others" in, to see themselves, encourage universal experience.
This American Life sounds intriguing; haven't come across it yet. is much easier to pack people in when you are preaching fire and brimstone and hell and damnation.
too true that people get off on punishment (including their own!) rather than forgiveness. such so-called "christians" are hardly Christ-like but more old testament vengeance-seekers. telling that between the voice of God and words of Jesus in the Bible, the most oft-repeated phrase is "Be not afraid". sadly obvious why it needs be said over and over.
Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem !?! they did some pretty fierce stuff too. where have all the revolutionaries gone along w/ the songs?

Here is the link to This American Life www.thislife.org/They have archives and you can listen to old shows... really good stuff...lots of David Sedaris, some Amy Sedaris, some Julia Sweeney, some Sarah Vowell episode 304 is the one about heretics...from the year 2005. episode 282 (2005) is about a guy falsely accused of murder and the lengths a friend will go to help him out and it is a great story.

I ordered my wife several of the three-disc collections for her birthday last month. We were regular listeners to the show while it was on here, but it was taken off after the last fund drive. So now we have to listen to recordings ...

Provi, Do you and your wife have any favorite episodes?
I like the one about the Rolm answering machine at Columbia University and how the students would forward funny messages to each other...
It's the "You and the little mermaid can go..." one. :-)
I still love the Julia Sweeney one where she really started paying attention to what the bible was saying and how she was horrified by it.

The Loon by Tapes 'n Tapes...good variety, mix of music and lyrics, not sure how to describe the sound (at one point thought of Meat Puppets/California "alternative" though sounds nothing like that exactly). enjoyed it. put it together on a loop w/ Emerson, Lake & Palmer; not similar but makes excellent complement to each other.
geogaddi by boards of canada...bit more percussion than i usually like mixed in w/ my ambient but a definite good listen regardless. wish the shorter pieces were longer! put me in mind some of Meat Beat Manifesto, mostly the spoken word samples, though only as a distant cousin. (thanks much to Moonage Daydream for the recommend !)

yes, Tapes 'n Tapes! the music is quite infectious: "Crazy Eights", "10 Gallon Ascots"(can't play it loud enough!), "Omaha", "Jakov's Suite"(another one for max volume), all primo. they have a very good range and all of the songs kick out one way or another (those lyrics!). first album in awhile i've listened to immediately repeatedly.

Nas - Hip Hop Is Dead A daring title that has a lot of people talking, especially less talented rappers who feel threatened. Unfortunetly for them Nas shows why he's still relevant 12 years after his first album
Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury Wasn't a fan of their first album but this album is solid, I can listen start to finish
Killswitch Engage - As Daylight Dies I tried, I tried. Never listen to gothic chicks when they explain the greatness of metal to you lol
Gwen Stefani - The Sweet Escape I'm kind of disapointed in all honesty, this doesn't live up to her first album, which was a lot of fun
Mercury Rev - Deserter's Songs I love the song "Holes, starting to get into the rest of it
Massive Attack - Collected Their greatest hits album basically, not a big fan of English artists but Massive Attack are Gods
Salyu - Name Her latest single, I am going to stalk her when I go to Japan
