Working at them is what many of us, BB included, find satisfying about discussing the film. We're not looking "too far into it" -- we're trying to reconcile the hard parts to make the movie work as a whole. I can see how some might find that too much effort, and would rather oversimplify. That's their decision, just as its ours to keep building the story toward completion. Yup, and besides, all those "lazy" theories about it all being a dream or Donnie being Schizo, are just too boringly simple... I mean, if you truly believe it, ok stick with it while you are cormftable with it... But it doesn't work for me, I enjoy having firey debates and complicating matters.

I DON'T KNOW IF THIS WAS POST BEFORE SO BE NICE IN CASE IT WAS....ANY...HERES MY THEORY..QICH I DON`T THINK IT IS MUCH OF A THEORY AS IT IS PRETTY MUCH KNOW FOR A FACT..SO..HERES A FACT..
the sister wouldn't`t die... if u go to donniedarko.com(and i suggest i do,cause i`m really bad in explaining things as u will soon find out) you can hear this call made from someone one from British airways to the investigator(or police man i don`t remember now) who was working in the case to find where did the jet engine came from.. anyway in that call the guy from the airways says that the jet engine that felt in Donnie room has the serial number identical to the one of one of their planes...that in fact the engine that they had in they`re plane was the same one that felt on Donnie's room which it would be impossible(for those in the story who have no idea of the time travel thing).
Bottom line is....the plane accident only happens in the tangent universe...cause in the real universe the plane is still intact and flying...therefore his sister doesn`t`t die once they`re no longer in the parallel world..

Ok - I don't want to chase you off, because we encourage new membership, and welcome input - but buckle up and I'll get the rant over with quickly! First, please don't type in caps - it's considered shouting, and while appropriate for emphasis is generally discouraged. If you start a post with "I DON'T KNOW IF THIS WAS POST BEFORE ", it tells us two things - you didn't read the board guidelines, and you didn't use the search facilty before posting. Compounded by shouting this is just going to piss people off. The material from donniedarko.com is generally considered canon here (see darkomovie.proboards24.com/index.cgi?board=offpass)Arguing the parellel universe angle, the idea that niether Donnie's mother or sister die in either universe has been discussed: darkomovie.proboards24.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=ending&thread=1092930430&page=1darkomovie.proboards24.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=disc&thread=1092806108&page=1darkomovie.proboards24.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=time&thread=1103562588&page=1And while I agree with your argument to a large extent, this isn't the topic for this post, which specifically asks the question "Would Samantha be on the plane in the PU" and the doubt cast on that considering the lack of otherworldly manipulation and the fact her brother has just been squished. So, please, before you post - search for a relevent topic first! Thus Endeth the Rant. Now that's over welcome aboard! You have obviously given some thought to the movie and we'd love to hear your input in the various discussions in the forums!

if donnie dies, either samantha goes on the trip, or she doesn't. IF SHE DOES, it is unlikely she would be on a plane at that time, most likely they would take a more regularly scheduled flight. if donnie doesn't die, it is more likely she goes on the trip. not certain, because we truly don't know. but more likely. and again, she would be with miss farmer and would most likely be on a later flight. What do you mean if donnie dies. They had said at the end he died and so did the website.

We often use the fact that Donnie's mother is on the plane as one motive to go back in time, etc, etc; however, his sister would've still been on the plane no matter what. His sister wasn't put on the plane by being manipulated like Donnie's mother was (the burning of the house, the child-porn dungeon, Mrs Farmer can't go to L.A.). Unless 'Sparkle Motion' was manipulated in to winning? Were they? The sister would have been on the plane. But the engine would not fall off beacuse it already did when it killed Donny.

Perhaps I must do even more viewings and revise my interpretation. I believed the talent show was being held in connection with the motivational speaker, who would not have come to the school except for the vandalism. Therefore, Sparkle Motion would not be on the plane.
Now, since I haven't read all of your threads, I might be shouted at for saying this has been covered. We newcomers do a lot of stumbling about, even when we have tried to look around prior to posting.
I suppose I should rummage around for my copy of "Donnie Darko" and watch it yet again. Obviously, I've misunderstood. For me, Donnie smiles because he knows that he's saving lives~his little sister's included. By dying, I thought, his mother, his sister, the girl he falls in love with, and Frank all will live~of having much more of an opportunity for life, not death. The teacher won't be fired, which also is a positive result. The downside is that the speaker will not be unmasked and the new girl at school will have to find someone else and likely will be taunted for what happened in her family.

What happens in S. Darko can't really be used as evidence at all unfortunately. The story doesn't follow on from DD corectly. The fact Samantha has the PoTT with a picture of Frank as a Bunny proves the story is all messed up in that film. Donnie never gets the PoTT from his teacher and he certainly doesn't meet Frank dressed as a bunny in the PU.
The point really is there is no plane crash in the PU so it doesn't matter who was on the plane. I think it's quite unlikely Samantha would have been on that plane after Donnie died but even if she had that plane wouldn't have had the engine ripped off by Donnie.
For me what is important to realise is virtually none of the events that happend in the TU would happen the same way once the PU starts back up. This is important in the discussion about what would happen if Donnie survived. There are lots of people who think if he lived then his mother and sister would die in a plane crash which would be very very very unlikely
