Why didn't Donnie just like leave his room but not go see Frank? ... is it just cause it makes a better movie, or am I missing something? Donnie would have stayed alive, not flooded the school (thus saving Gretchen), and the TU that was created (NOT because of the jet engine, as is stated in the PoTT) would have NOT had Donnie as the living reciever. So... is it "artistic licence" or am I missing something?

I'm referring to the end of the movie, of course.

Why didn't Donnie just like leave his room but not go see Frank? It's a good question to have, just not going to be received as a good question to post. The answer, based largely on the Philosophy of Time Travel, the book written by Sparrow in the movie and available for viewing at donniedarko.com, is that Donnie was a superhero-style character called a Living Receiver, charged with returning an "artifact" (the plane engine) to the primary universe in order to keep the tangent universe from destroying the primary when the TU implodes. I suggest searches for "living receiver" and "return engine" for more on the topic.

Yes, I understand the whole artifact thing, but the question I'm asking is this: since Donnie completed his "mission" for the TU (i.e returning the artifact), could he not have just stayed clear of the engine? Does the living reciever always have to die once he has completed his mission?

Does the living reciever always have to die once he has completed his mission? Richard Kelly said Donnie didn't necessarily have to die in the commentary, it's just how it ended. But if Grandma Death was once the living receiver would you really want to live like her.

I love going to a postbox, seeing there's nothing inside, walking halfway across the street and thinking there could be mail in it now! That's like my second best hobbie! (after using blatant sarcasm, that is) ;D
