Ok, in the primary universe, Donnie has his timetravel powers, etc. He knows he is going to die, by seeing his path (the liquid things that come out of their chests) so he decides that night to create the TU, allowing him to live those 28 days where the plane didnt hit him. He lives in the TU those 28 days, along with Frank the rabbit, gretchen, and everyone else that affects him. Near the end he realizes that his decision to live would mean the death of Gretchen, his sister and mother. Once back in the PU, he laughs because he won't die alone, because everyone he loved would still be alive...
Then he dies from the engine...
