Like everyone else, I have been bothered with "Why did Donnie have to die?". It finally hit me and I wanted to hear other's opinions. Donnie had to die because he remembered the other timeline so he was the only remnant of the TU(besides the artifact but he is not metal). In the book it mentions other people dying from arrowheads from nowhere and bullets from guns that don't exist. I think the receiver has to die. What do you think?

A very interesting proposition -- thanks for sharing it. That bit about arrows and mysterious swords in the PoTT certainly seems to suggest that the LR's death is fated -- that he or she MUST die as part of the grand TU/LR/artifact/etc. equation.
I like where you're going with the "he has to die because his knowledge makes him a remnant of the TU" idea, but I'm not sure I can make it work with what we know. Here are a couple reasons why:
1) More people than Donnie remember the TU -- Many of us agree, based on the movie, the PoTT and the director's commentary/interviews, that everyone transported to the TU awakes with some memories of what happened there. It's why Swaze's character kills himself and why Donnie's mom and Gretchen appear to have some connection as the movie closes. If knowledge/memory of the TU were a threat that must be eliminated, I think all those others would have to die, too.
2) It's not the knowledge, it's the TU itself -- The Pott tells us that the Tangent Universe is an aberration in the 4th Dimension ... an unstable universe that must eventually fail and, in doing so, destroy the Primary Universe with it. So the threat that must be ended is the existence of the physical TU itself (and the wormhole that connects it with the PU). This doesn't suggest to me that knowledge of the TU is dangerous.
Again, I appreciate the direction you're heading in. Because I'm one who would LOVE to have a satisfying answer to the question of why Donnie dies (and if it's his choice), I encourage you to keep exploring the idea.

OK how about this. The reason Donnie has the 4th dimensional powers is because he died in the normal universe similar to how Frank had time travel powers in the TU because he died. If he didn't die then it creates a paradox and he would not have had the powers to be the living receiver.

My thinking is that he has the powers because he was close to the epicenter of the portal when it opened up. That is why he is the the LR. He has the powers because the LR has these powers.

When I first saw it I thought Donnie had to die because otherwise Gretchen would of stayed dead and he loved her enough to die for her. But thats just me and if it's already been said ... Sorry...

maybe he lived this movie already so he had a memory of frank when he started hallucinatin he taked that picture and that leaded him to do the things he done like walkin away before the jet engine crash
grandma death may realised this in the previous happenin and knew there was gonna be a letter from Donie (the walkin from letterbox to house)
still the woman who said the thing about the cellear door could be a sort of god who realizes everytime it happens and could give him the tip about the cellear door (see was closed-up many times so there has to be a reason for that)
if my spellin in't right that can be because i'm a 13 year old dutch boy ;D
