Why did Donnie have to die if his mother and his sister died in the plane crash? I thought by Donnie dying, he was able to save them? So why do his mother and sister die earlier in the movie?

Well then we must have saw different directors cuts... You're probably right. I saw the one that was just released in theaters. You're probably referring to the one currently out on DVD. You should really check out the one in theaters right now! It's great!

When did it happen in the movie? It happens while Donnie is up in the hills on his bike. He sees the plane and has a "flash back" (it's actually a "flash forward") and he sees his family being laid to rest.
