Here is something I posted on my message board when I first saw the movie last night. I since found this site and thought I would fix the post up and post it here for you guys.
I think that the liquid trails represent God's path for you, or your destiny. Its where you are supposed to go, where they are supposed to take you. Refer to the convo he has with his science teacher. They never stear Darko into danger at all, infact they show him the tool to defeat Frank. Also if you notice, the trails only show up when Donnie is happy, or feeling love. The love of a family or of a girl. All good things, they are a product of good, and produce only good.
Donnie is supposed to die in his room, its an act of God so to speak, because it goes off the tangent as it is unexplainable, refer to the convo again that science convo really explains the whole movie. Now Frank is the devil, he disrupts Donnie from the trail, which is supposed to end in the bed room. This is like the last temptation of christ. He gives Donnie the chance to live, but at a cost. He tells him what to do. And if he lives, the people he loves, his girlfriend, sister and mother will die, and the world will end. He has 28 days to make his choice, because that is when the other end of the worm hole opens that sends the engine through, and also when the reality loops back over itself. Darko realizes this, and chooses instead to die and save everyone, the ultimate sacrifice.
Now Grandma Death, she obviously knows whats going on. I think she lived through the same thing, but chose to live. Now she is alone for ever. Donnie doesnt want this "I dont want to be alone." The whole movie is about faith. I think he now believes in God. The thing he says at the end. I hope that when the world comes to an end, I can breathe a sigh of relief, because there, will be so much to look forward to."
He's referring to an after life in heaven, where he will not be alone.
Everyone in the movie serves to swing Darko's choice to either heaven or hell. Fear or Love. If he is afraid, he wont sacrifice his life and everyone will die. If he loves them and feels loved for perhaps the first time in his life, he will choose to save them. The teachers are his guides, Angel's so to speak. They set up a lot of things in the movie. She sets him up with the girl. He tells him about time travel and Roberta Sparrow. Roberta Sparrow knows what is happening, she is like a prophet. Frank is the temptation, the devil or a tool of the devil.
Notice that once he kills the boy Frank, the ghost Frank doesn’t appear any more, there’s no more weird shit at all. Its stopped. He tells the guy, "Run home and tell your parents. Everything will be ok." He's realized what he has to do, and makes his choice not to listen to frank. Time loops back to October 2nd, and he is shown the same choice again. The boy Frank honks the horn again, (frank is really going out with Darko's sister), Darko wakes up again, but choose to ignore Frank this time. He laughs, is at peace, is not afraid. Rolls over. And dies. Times moves on with the new choice.
