Why does Frank save Donnie from death @ the start?

If Frank didnt bring Donnie outside, he wud have died right away and all the people that died in the film would not have, just like in the ending.

With Donnie surviving, he simply screwed up the lives of other people. great. He realises at the end of the film that it is right for him to die, to stop these people from suffering does he not? So why not just leave him to die at the start?

Basically, Frank saved Donnie at the beginning because Donnie had been chosen as the 'living reciever' who must send the 'artifact' (in this case the jet engine) back into the primary universe. He must do this to close the wormhole between the primary and tangent universes and prevent the primary universe collapsing. To get this you need to read Roberta Sparrow's book at this link:

(Another idea why Donnie was saved at the beginning is to show him what would happen if he didn't die. He sees the people he would save by dying and he also sees how many people love him. Therefore, his greatest fear doesn't come true; as long as people love him he doesn't die alone.)

I say, it was an adjustment to a previous timeline, where there was no jet engine crashing through the roof, but Frank was still killed.

There are more instances of time travel than are apparent to the eye, IMO.

Depends on how you define "the world". If his time created an alternate timeline, one that will end with his death, then an entire universe ends.

ok, if you go with the theory that this was a divine intervention by God(which is the best to me), then frank(controled by God, or maybe is God) got donnie out of bed to show him that he doesnt die alone (the question through the whole movie) and that death isnt the worse thing that can happen to you. So he goes though all the stuff after he gets out of bed then when he goes back he relizes hes not dying alone and that "there be so much to look forward to" after it. or if you dont use that theory i guess you could say it was to show him that his death wasnt in vain....but then who was it that wanted him to know his death wasnt in vain? kinda leads you back to God, or just Frank from the future wanted him to know it wasnt in vain.

Also like abi said, he was the living reciever too, so i think along with God showing him he wont die alone, he is meant to not die then so he can close the portle.

The closing of the tangent universe did not depend on Donnie's death at all. On the directors comentary Richard Kelly states that the tangent universe begins at 12am on October 2nd not when the engine falls on the Darko residence. This theory is also justified because in Roberta Sparrow's book, she states that just occur at random, rare times, not because of anything Donnie did.

Here's something else to think about if the fact that the tangent started at 12am is true. If donnie would have died right away he wouldn't be alive to send the engine back thus creating a paradox and the world would have ended because what happened in the past would have to be undone because it wasn't done in the future. (if that makes sense haha). Donnie sent the engine back and closed the tangent, his duty was done he didn't need to die. I don't think he knew what he was doing when he rolled over laughing. I think that he just thought the whole ordeal was a dream and he was just relieved it was over. I mean if I went through all of that chain of events and I was instantly transported back to the beginning, I would be a little disoriented too and not realize that I needed to get up out of bed. RK also says that his laughing may be a chuckle of relief or a chuckle of enlightenment so its really open to interpretation.

Nothing, yes, the tangent starts at 12 AM, not with the engine crashing. The film was originally much more clear regarding the science-fiction/super-hero elements. Donnie's role as the "living reciever" etc., is apparently made much more clear by the Director's Cut. But, as some critics have already said, will the new clarity harm the film's initial cult appeal? Not having seen the D.C. yet, I don't know, I think I'll enjoy both versions, but certainly the oblique nature of the original lends to its appeal.
Got off on a tangent and didn't mean to. Anyway, Tangent U. is at 12AM, leading one to surmise the existence of a Deus Ex Machina, someone of something manipulating these events as we see them in the film. For me, the Deus Ex is the key. Anyway...
