I just got done watching this movie after I heard all the hype of there-release in the theaters so I'm not sure if this has been mentioned or not so please bear with me, but the key to the whole movie is in three words. This doesn't cover all series' of events but it is the major plot device.
Deus ex Machina:
The definition goes like this.
1. In ancient Greek drama, an apparently insoluble crisis was solved by the intervention of a god, often brought on stage by an elaborate piece of equipment. This "god from the machine" was literally a deus ex machina.
2. An unexpected, artificial, or improbable character, device, or event introduced suddenly in a work of fiction or drama to resolve a situation or untangle a plot.
3. A person or event that provides a sudden and unexpected solution to a difficulty
At the end, Donnie Figures out what is going on when he says “Deus ex Machina”
I think Donnie learning about time travel from sparrows book was just a tool to give him an explanation of what was happening to him and to outline what was happening in the movie. We only saw one time line in two parallels of time. I think these parallels cycle to perform gods’ will.
In both Parallels Cunningham is a child porn dealer, which is obviously not good. In the parallel that we see in the movie, Gretchen, Frank, Donnie’s Mother and Sister are all killed by the series of events that Donnie performs because of the intervention of frank. But in the process Cunningham is discovered when Donnie burns his houses down.
In the untold Parallel, Donnie Dies by the jet engine there for Gretchen and Frank live because the whole scenario surrounding their deaths never happens. Donnie’s Mother lives because she never would have gotten on the plane, Kitty would have gone to the star search show. Donnie’s sister would have lived because Donnie’s mother took an earlier flight to get home because she was worried about him, Kitty would have taken the Original Flight. But Cunningham is never discovered because Donnie does not burn his house down which lead to the discovery of the filth.
Is it better to sacrifice the lives of 4 people to uncover the filth of Cunningham?
All of these series of events revolve around one pivotal plot device. The Deus ex Machina “god from the machine.”
I've only watched this once so I'm probably missing some things I over looked. Thanks for your time!
