Why did Frank make Donnie do all those things? It didnt seem like they had a point. I'm talking about flooding the school and causing the fire.
Also, how was the tangent dimension closed in the end? Was the artifact returned to the primary universe or something?
I get the entire concept of the movie except this really.

Why did Frank make Donnie do all those things? It didnt seem like they had a point. I'm talking about flooding the school and causing the fire. In the primary universe, Frank kills Gretchen and Donnie kills Frank. In order for Donnie to remember this happening and choosing to sacrifice himself to save the two of them, Donnie dreams the event. However, in order for him to dream it (from the tangent universe) it would have to happen again. When the plane engine from the primary universe crashed into the tangent universe at the beginning of the movie, the tangent universe timeline becomes different than the primary universe timeline, but the same event of Frank killing Gretchen has to happen again. The school is flooded and then Donnie and Gretchen start going out. This also gets the english teacher fired and she write "cellar door" on the blackboard. The fire causes Ms. Farmer to go to Cunningham's hearing, and Rose Darko leaves town w/ Sparkle Motion. A party is thrown because Rose left. At the party, Donnie leads Gretchen out of the party, and she is killed by Frank. Therefore, the fire leads to Gretchen dying. Furthermore, the "cellar door" thing is said by Donnie before they go into the house. Donnie would not have gone in the house w/ Gretchen if she wasn't fired, which would not have happened if the flood didn't happen. The flooding also caused Seth to hate Donnie cuz the teachers thought Seth did it, and he thought Donnie did it. Then, they attacked Donnie and Gretchen which led to their death. Therefore, without the flood and the fire happening, Gretchen wouldn't have died again, and Donnie wouldn't have dreamed that happening, and then Donnie wouldn't have sacrificed himself. Also, the party caused Frank to get beer which led to him running over Gretchen, but not before Sparrow went to check her mailbox, causing the car to swerve and hit Gretchen. In the director's cut, we find out that Frank told Donnie to write Sparrow a letter.

The jet engine that crashed into donnie bedroom near the begining of the movie is the key to EVERYTHING. You see, this jet engine came from NOWHERE initially. It's creation was a result of the corruption of the space time continuum. How this corruption occured is not made clear, but one can assume that this type of occurence, although rare, does occur on occasion. Robert Sparrow's book THE PHYLOSPHY OF TIME alludes to this. This corruption created a paradox in which this engine appeared out of nowwhere and then crashed thru Donnie's bedroom nearly killing him. Since everything in the universe must come from SOMEWHERE, since everything must have a begining and end, the IMPOSSIBILITY of this engine existing caused an instability in the very fabric of the space time continuum, most noticably in the vacinity of Middlesex, Virginia, where the story takes place. From this point on everything that occurs, does so in a TANGENT UNIVERSE. Eventually, according to THE PHILOSPHY OF TIME, this would lead to the formation of a black hole, or a wormhole, which would collapse in upon itself destroying everything. Now, if Donnie had died in the being of the movie everthing would have continued on like "normal" until the wormhole consumed everything. HOWEVER, some higher power, be it GOD or whatever, saw this eventuallity and decided to intervene. They awoke Donnie from his slumber so they could use him to put things right. WHY DONNIE YOU ASK? Because, quite frankly, Donnie was expendable. He was going to die ethier way, so at least this way, it would not be an empty death. Donnie purpose was to give this Jet Engine which appeared out of nowwhere, which could be tied to no plane that might have crashed, a reason for existing. So Donnie, with the abilities granted to him by this HIGHER POWER was able to send sheer the jet engine from plane that his mother was on(that had been maneuvered into position by this higher power), and send it back thru the wormhole to crash into his bedroom back in the Primary Universe. Now, thanks to Donnie, the Jet Engine had a reason for being, it CAME FROM SOMEWHERE, if even only from a Tangent Universe that no longer existed. Because once the paradox of the engines existence had been resolved, the Tangent Universe dissapeared and the Primary Universe continued on like it always had. Now, since the Tangent Universe had been eradicated, all but a few lingering memories(or dreams) remained of what had occured(alluded to during the MAD WORLD montage). So with the knowledge of the Tangent Universe gone, Donnie didnt know what was going to crash thru his bedroom roof, and he was killed. But one can safely assumed that the Donnie that existed in the Tangent Universe knew what his fate would be, and sacrificed himself for his friends, for his love Gretchen, for this family, for the Universe. And that is in essence, why he is a HERO and why this MOVE ROCKS!!!!
