***I'M NOT TRYING TO BE AN ASSHOLE BY TRYING TO DISPROVE THIS THEORY, IT JUST DIDN'T WORK FOR ME, JUST MY OPINION I GUESS***
Alright, so many ppl have suggested that the whole movie was like that one story "An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge" where its all just Donnie's dream a split second before he actually dies etc. But this can not be true, because at the end of Donnie Darko, all the characters are back in the "primary universe" after being in the "tangent universe." They wake up, thinking that the "tangent universe" was just a dream, but it wasn't, it really happened, but they only have a vague memory of it, because they all thought it was just a dream or something.
This is evident because Gretchen thinks she knows Donnie, but she knows she doesnt (except she really does she just doesn't remmber) This is also why Frank touches his eye to check if it's still there after waking up from a nightmare (except it wasnt it really happened, Donnie just set it back so it wouldn't happen blah blah). It's like if you had a nightmare about your finger or something being cut off you might check your hand to see if it's still there when you wake up, even though you know it's there, you do it anyways...well atleast that's what I do if I have dreams like that, maybe I'm just weird.
Unless all the characters had the same dream at the same exact time as Donnie, this theory could work, but that is highly unlikely. Another person said that God was jsut showing Donnie what would happen if he didn't die and was backing up his reason to kill Donnie, but again, this can not be true, unless God gave everyone in the town the same vision, which is highly unlikely, and the movie doesnt provide any evidence for the possibility of such a thing happening.
