Because the tangent universe that most of the movie occurs in seems like a dream to her and all the other people who knew Donnie but she can still remember him faintly

why did gretchen not know donnie at the end? Because the part where Gretchen meets Donnie is an alternate universe. The events that happened through that time(basically the whole movie) have been mostly erased from their memories. They still vaguely remember parts of it though, as you see in the part of the movie when the Madworld song is playing. It shows each character. You'll notice how Frank is designing his bunny costume, but he also checks his eye, as though he is checking to see if it has been shot or not. You see how Gretchen hesitates at the end when asked if she knew Donnie. That was because she probably had some vague memory of his from the alternate universe. Very Good movie by the way. Hope it is released in theatres out this way. |

doesnt the part where they meet come after the engine crashed into his room? so he died before he woulda actually met her..

Hmm I agree with you, i think grecthen was desperate to get donnie and at the end she doesn't know who donnie is, i think gretchen was a deperate bitch!! |

well, didnt gretchen get ran over by frank towards the end, and if she was killed in the tagent universe, wouldnt that make her just like frank, trying to help donnie save the world?  |

Ya it would, I think that's exactly what happened. Especially when you look at roberta sparrow's book. But HOW did donnie save the world? I see how he saves a few lives...but how was it the whole world? And how did Frank help him with this?

Gretchen probably didn't recognize Donnie because:
a) She'd never been to his house
b) She was new to school and met a whole ton of new people and she isn't great with names / faces.
c) Donnie was pretty squished up by the plane engine. I'm sure his own mother didn't even recognize him.

A note for "confused":
donnie saved the world, not just a few people. By sending back the artefact to the primary universe, he closed the wormhole between the two universes. If this artefact had not returned, when the tangent universe collapsed, it would have taken the primary with it.

THANK YOU, Adam. So many people refuse to read up on this movie and just assume its all about time travel and stuff like that.
Heck, I know people who go as far to say the movie's about "A big rabbit" and nothing else.

TEXTI recomend to see the extended version of the movie, it shows more of what roberta sparrow wrote in her book about tagent universe and timetravel. Anyways this is
