I saw this the other day and I've been looking on this sight to try and understand the movie, but I think you guys might have something wrong on here. A lot of posts say Donnie broke the water main so he could meet Gretchen, but didn't he meet her before that when she came into his English class and she sat next to him?
Also I thought the ending was that it was a neverending loop and he had realised that he couldn't brake it without dieing and ultimatly stopping him from ever meeting Gretchen. I think that that's why Gretchen was manipulated dead because she new she shouldn't be dead and that the only way for donnie to replace the darkness that was everything up until when he's back on the ridge at the end of the world was to go back and die so that he wouldn't meet her. I think thats why Gretchen new Mr's Darko at the end and why Donnie didn't get out of the bed.
Tell me what you think.

So, Imma say that frank was kinda POed that he got shot in the face (or another more complex non future reason) so he wanted to fuck with Donnie's life. Thus waking him up and making him break the water mane. Which then led him to have school cancelled, and meet Gretchen who he would really like. But then the chain of events Frank made him do made it worse. Frank did warn him that the world would end in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, 12 seconds. His world. Donnie's world. He then made Donnie burn down the guy's house, thus causing the media to find out about his kiddie porn, making Kitty Farmer have to appear at his arraignment, making Rose Darko have to go with Samantha on her trip, letting them have a halloween/Harvard acceptance party...then Donnie gets the wild idea to go to the "cellar door" where the kids steal the gems from grandma death as his dad talked about. Then the bullies try to hurt them and then Frank (on the beer run) swerves and hits Gretchen, thus making future Frank happy (Donnie is now sad). Tho Donnie stopped this horrible cycle from ever happening again by shooting Frank (so he can't come back and wake him up again) and telling his friend in the clown suit to tell his parents that "everything will be okay." From there on out, Donnie had his plan of action to save the lives of everyone else and only harm himself...to start over if you will. This is only 1/100 of the whole wonder that is Donnie Darko too much? too little? wrong? IM me at Buttterfly180 on AIM...yes there are 3 t's

I really dont think PO'ed because in the theater scene he is shown as remorseful and benevolent and no he didnt break the water main to meet Gretchen but Frank knew he would if he did
