I must confess that I have not read all of the interpretations, but I do strongly believe that no one ever thought on this one:
If Donnie Darko would died at the beginning of the film, if he hadn't experience all of what he've experienced, his death would be meaningless, as it to say that it wouldn't had made sense. That's what about Donnie Darko: about the meaning of life, the sense in it, and its search. Because it has one, even if the meaning is dying.
I'm available to discuss my point of view. By the way, my surname (Coelho) means Rabbit in portuguese ;D

The Portuguese interpretation of my surname would be "you should read all of the interpretations instead of starting new threads because this one has been thought of before by several people on the site"

:)Thank you for your kindness, WiseAss! By the way, even if I had not read all of the posts, I have read most of them. And Cinema critics on newspapers, magazines, and many other sites referring to this matter. So, if I missed one that is according to my point of view of the film, I am very deeply sorry! So, if there is anyone who is intelectually fair around here, reply decently or do not say nothing at all! (Oh, and izz: pear tree in portuguese is "pereira". But I have just mentioned my surname because it actually has something to do with the film ;D)

Ruben, about Donnie's death not making sence if everything didn't happen....i would agree. I also believe that Frank's entire pupose in the movie was to show that Donnie would not die alone. As you probably know, Donnie did not believe in God at first and asked his doctor about being an atheist. He also feared dying alone. Frank showed that there was a God that controlled everything and made Donnie believe. Therefore, i think he's laughing at the end because he knows he isn't goign to die alone.

This idea has been going through my mind, but I haven't brought it up because I figured it was just me looking too deeply and probably wasn't the intended message. But I certainly like the idea. A simpler form than that - I hadn't really gotten to the point of thinking it was a chance for Donnie to get straight with God before he died - I saw it as perhaps an oppertunity to experience a life he otherwise never would've gotten to see. Turning it into a scenario in which he needs to learn that God is really out there. You can almost connect it ti a film that's much less obvious, "It's a Wonderful Life".

I like to think that Frank helped donnie go back to change his last days. Gretchen makes the comment that what if you could go back and replace the darkness with better things. She is talking about there school project the IMG's but I think thats what Donnie does. He goes back filling his last days with better things. Also he is afraid to die alone like you guys have said. Hens him meeting Gretchen. He does other things to some for himself. Like flooding the school. He does good to though with exposing the child porn ring. This is what I think about some of the movie. I still don't really know about him loughing at the end.

hmmm filling his last days with better things, I don't really think so. All the things he does and which he's being told to do by frank seem to have that plan and lead to that event when Gretchen dies and when he shoots Frank. Frank tells him to leave the house so he survives, he floods the school so he gets together with Gretchen, the child porn ring gets exposed so his mom leaves and they can have a party and so on.. I guess the death of a loved person isn't the best thing to fill up ones last days Btw I suppose he just laughs about irony, so many things to look forward to and which he's gonna give up, for instance probably saving the girl's life who he won't be able to be with.

I guess Donnie couldn't have understood his sacrifice (his death prevents Gretchen and Frank's death) without finding out about it. He also loses his fear of death throughout the film, because he realizes that he went from late October back to his bed, so he knows God exists and is no longer afraid of death. "There will be so much to look forward to."

why does he know that god exists? going back in time could be a natural phenomenon and well was he afraid of death? i just know he was afraid of being alone and of dying alone. what if his actions had an influence on the time phenomenon and if he broke the cycle by dying and so saved the world from repeating. that would mean he's in ways even playing god himself

i agree with d about him laughing, like its this weird irony. thats exactly what i thought! its a hard irony to explain, like "this is what i was scared of?" thats what i got from the film, it was weird cuz after watching the movie and doing some research, when i thought of death i kinda giggled. i cant really explain but i totally get why he laughed.

TEXTTEXTthe whole reason he died is he returned the artifact back to the past the same jet engine was the same one that crushed his room well of course you people already knew this right makes me seem stupid but anyways the theory of robertta sparrow was if the artifact was not returned all of existence would end. so frank set a trap for him yeah it doesnt make sense it will if you read the pholisophy of time travel so he goes back in time to return the artifact and then killed by it yeah............ :-/if you wanna talk about that my aim sn is angeldamnation

i just watched Donnie Darko and was blown away by ending. Most people on this sight are simplifying the ending, assuming their interpretation is a full explanation. I dont know, i like the idea that Donnie is laughing due to the twisted irony that he is saving the lives of people he cannot be with. But i'm pretty confused about everything else. Like how does Donnie go back in time? The requirements were a vessel that could travel faster than the speed of light and a wormhole, he had none of those things. And why does he kill frank? And has donnie stopped the world from ending and how?
Whatever your interpretation, i'm interested in gaining a better understanding. Anyone who walks away from that film thinking they've got all the answers has missed out on a huge element of the film.

and another thing, i dont think there is anything to suggest that Darko has found god by the end. Fate and destiny dont necessarily support the existence of god. I think he does try and fill his last days with better things, his last selfless act means that he saves the lives of the people he loves.
