I'm not even sure if anyone will see this, but here is my take on the film:
The tangent universe is not created because Donnie was saved from the jet engine by frank in the beginning, it is created because the jet engine (or artifact) is deposited into the world, and breaks the law of conservation of matter, because as we know, as stated in some of the movies commentary, time travels and exists in a line. Well, the tangent universe is created and exists only up until the time that the artifact entered the portal in the first place. Unless conditions are met in that tangent universe sending the artifact back in time, a tear in the very time/space fabric would occur, because if that plane engine hit donnies house on Oct. 2nd, and never enters the portal to travel back to that point on Oct. 30th, then that breaks the aforementioned physics fundamental law.
Now, this means that time travel can only occur from present to past, or backwards. Time travel cannot be controlled, thus Donnie cannot control where he goes, where the jet engine goes, nor can he enter the portal. The Donnie at the end of the movie in actuality never experienced any of the things the Donnie in the Tangent universe did because it never actually happened in the real universe (so he wouldn't REALLY know that the Jet engine was comming in the real universe), and was essentially erased. Donnie was, however the chosen one in the tangent universe and that is why he survived the jet crash in the first place. There is no "chosen one" in the real universe (4th demension)
That is why and how frank came to him as a manipulated dead, because donnie had to fulfill the "prophecy" if you must, as he is the only one that can send the engine back (and remember the events must play out sending the engine back in time, or the universe tears apart during the broken law) and fulfill all of the prerequisites for it to do so. The "Philosophy of Time Travel" stated that the chosen one had special powers (such as telekinesis among other super abilites [as referenced by the "sounds like the name of a superhero" scene]) By unseen forces outside of the movie, the tangent donnie was able to guide the plane into the portal, but not himself. That satisfied the law of conservation of energy, so the tangent universe would cease to exist and the real 4th dimension could keep going (even though the tangent one would destroy itself because in satisfying the law of conservation of energy in the real world, it was broken in the tangent world due to the engine essentially dissappearing) . The reason Donnie died is because everything was satisfied, and there was no reason or way for any sort of manipulative dead to try and save him because what you see is the Donnie of the real world, and the manipulated dead can only occur in the tangent universe, which was created at the instant the jet engine came into the world the "1st" time (in reality it only entered the world once, the movie is just a display of how it came into the world, the tangent universe, and how events played out in the real world). The Donnie of the real universe couldn't have known what was comming REALLY, and as stated by the philosophy of time travel the hero would only have subconscious recollection in the real world of the events in the tangent world.
Think about the movie almost as a flashback. When a loop completes itself, it comes back to where it began. This entire movie (the tangent universe) actually occured in an instant of the real universe, because it is more or less a loop. The portal created at the end of the movie was actually (this is just me interjecting) the beginning of the tear in time. It was beginning to rip itself apart, and in doing so created the worm hole. In that instant, as the jet engine was directed into it and therefore to October 2nd, only the tangent universe continues to tear and destroy itself, because as we all know matter was essentially " destroyed" in it when the engine " disappeared."
Look at the tangent universe as sort of a loop in time. Thus it can be legitimately refered to a dream, albiet one that occurs in the duration of an instant. I hope this makes sense to people. It was hard for me to put it all in one complete thought.

Saw "Donnie Darko" at 12:am this morning, for me quite frankly - have no idea what the big hue and cry is over with this purported cult classic... It is worthy of Philip K Dick, but that's about all!
