donnie sees the worm hole and goes through it.....taking him back in time to when the jets about to land.......he stays awake so he doesn't sleep walk out to the golf greens......by stayin in his room he gets killed....He realises this and knows this is the only way his girlfriend doesn't die.......as he is dead when she gets into town he has been killed therefore never knowing donnie and not getting run over by a car.....That simple....He dies to save his girlfriend...

such a childish simplistic ending isn't it but "YOUR NOT LISTENING IT'S NOT THAT SIMPLE YOU JUST CAN'T IGNORE EVERY THING ELSE" (i know thats not a fully acurate quote but you get the idea)

He doesnt just save his girlfriend.... he saves everyone. If Donnie had not of guided the jet plane back to the primary universe and closed the tangent universe, then the tangent universe would of collapsed which would create a black hole in the primary universe causing disastrous effects.

But he didn't know that. His motivation was saving her. Frank knew about having to get the artifact back and made it so Donnie would be motivated to go back.
