now Im not the most versed in this film so this may have already been disgused, but what is very odd to me is to open to donnie: at the edge of the precipce from which he escapes this "tangent universe." now obviously this just my little theory but hear me out.
I would like to suggest that donnie is part of a cycle that he cant escape... that no one can escape. The purpose of the film is to trie to end the cycle but in the end it just begins again as donnie takes his love into the parallel universe. Because of his love he sacrifices the world. NOw frank in this new world must face the same challenge that donnie once faced.
My theory comes mostly from the films start. Donnie seems so happy and so out of place as he awakes to that flash of light that fades to the Donnie Darko title. If we watch the movie with the INXS song that was orriginaly to occompany it before killing moon... i believe you get a strong sense of this.
please respond with your comments
I understand that the films orginal opening music was the inxs song never tear us apart. I think you watch the opening with this song, you get a sense that donnie has found a way for he and his love to live for ever as

Interesting. I agree with you, I think the movie may present an infinite loop. Also, good idea on the INXS song, I guess we'll get to see the film with that when the director's cut comes out. But, playing devil's advocate, the song could be just an example of forshadowing, i.e. that Donnie and Gretchen will be torn apart. But, since I'm not familiar with the song lyrics, I could be wrong. Anyway, interesting stuff. Peace out.

An interesting theory, however, I think the opening is an early take on his sleep walking disorder.

I think his Sleep Walking disorder accompanied him most of his life. Remember the question his friend made him: "Are you sleep walking again? My father saw you at the golf course", or something like that.
I liked the infinite loop theory. But I think the circularity is made only once... so he could realise the meaning of his death.

Although "Never Tear us Apart" was removed from the opening, Joy Division's "Love will Tear us apart" is used during the halloween party.
