Alright, this is merely MY theory that i developed after seeing the movie for the first time, it is very naive and weak, but i just wanted to get it out there:
Donnie has lead a sad and miserable life, from birth up until the time he dies. The supreme universal force (God-being) notices this, and creates a tangent universe for Donnie. The reason this universe is created is so Donnie can get some happiness before he dies, and he gets it through Gretchen. As someone who's never been understood, having Gretchen is his happiness before he dies, but since it is just a tangent universe, it is unstable and must end. So when Gretchen dies and stuff, thats just the universe imploding. This theory helps explain his comment to Cherita, "some day everything will be better for you", in that before she dies, God will make sure she feels true happiness. Frank is in the tangent because Donnie needs someone to guide him, Frank is sort of like God manifested. I don't know how this would explain the Kiddie Porn, or his the fear-love scale, or sub-plots like that, this is just a primative theory that was developed without knowledge exteneding any further then the movie itself.
