Hi, im have been thinking about this movie for a long time and had to get some thoughts off my chest. They might not be in the most coherent or fluent order. They might even contradict each other at times, but its late, and im tired, and I already spent an hour of homework time on this. Anyways, hope you enjoy and please let me know what you think?
-I believe that the movie is about how Donnie is in danger of veering off his path and upsetting his universe. His sleepwalking symbolizes his subconcious hunger for control. This being a danger as he might sleepwalk away from his bed when the engine is to fall. In the commentary Richard Kelly says that the movie is basicaly a story about divine intervention, and I believe that this is what happens to Donnie. The posts referring to the twilight zone episode, how an entire episode occurs in the blink of an eye, is exactly what happens. That being said, when Donnie is first shown Frank, he begins a vision quest of sorts. Frank is the bunny that will lead him into the hole and on his hero cycle. This can be supported by the fact Donnie wakes up from this first meeting on a golf course, "holes", ok great. Also, when Donnie first sees Frank he then jumps into the tangent universe, thereby freezing that exact point in his original universe. This is the point where Donnie jumps to with the wormhole in the end of the movie. Yes, I am saying there are multiple universes, each containg a unique but singular path for a person. Also, notice how the engine does not fall unitil after Donnie meets with Frank for the first time. Conitinuing on, Frank mentions the end of the world, which is the end of the tangent universe and the end of Donnies quest. The biggest arguement, for me, in this movie is Free will versus fate. Whether a person chooses to do, or is meant to do. This is displayed as the mulptiple universe theory. His choices put him on different paths which are within different dimensions, since you can only have one path for each dimension. One of the best lines in the film is when donnie is in english class and answers the question about the reading, how it was ironic about burning the money because they just wanted to see what happens when they tear the world apart. Donnie is "ironicaly" seeing what would happen to him if he were to do the same. God grants him this gift to see what were to occur if he were to act on his emotions. Donnie says he wants to open other people eyes to certain things, he says he wants to change things. Which he does but doesnt realize yet. The line where they talk about the baby and how it needs darkness, this is what everyone is in the Tangent is trying to show to Donnie, that things are a way for a reason. There is a certain order to the universe that must not be tampered with. I didnt hear too many people mentioning the Swayze "Fear" tapes. They are there to further encourage Donnie to give up his fear in life, and to trust and belive in God. This goes along with Donnie's desire to resist the natural order. Donnie is able to participate in the tangent universe, however, if he were not to follow the path that Frank sent him on he would not be able to reach the portal. If he doesnt do this he cant go back to his original universe to change the fate for all those he cares about. If he did not follow he would be caught within a differernt universe or a loop perhaps, which is what occurs to Roberta Sparrow and is why she was obsessed with time travel as she is looking for it as a way to escape and to control her life.
