Alright, i thought id tackle another theme that goes thru the movie that i dont see on the 1st page of the board. The whole story about frank and stuff seems to parallel man's search for god, and when donnie tells his shrink about frank and him telling donnie what to do, the shrink confuses donnie talking about frank with donnie talking about god. Donnie says he is listening to frank because he saved donnies life, much like jesus christ was said to have done etc etc. This poses the question of what solution does the movie make? because in the end everything turns out to be true, and donnie isnt crazy, while everyone in the town is freaked by the strange 'dream' they all just had at the same time. So in essence, even when the people are confronted with the solution, they still do not believe what has happened, or do they?

Well we know that Donnie isn't Atheist at the beginning of the movie because he suggests that there is no evidence to imply the existence of a God, and by using the word evidence he opens up the possibility of God existing making him Agnostic (as Dr.Thurman explains). I think the whole 'existence of God or not' is encapsulated in the quote "Every living creature dies alone." It's clear at the beginning of the movie Donnie believes that this is true, with the example of his dog dying alone under the porch but at the end he is comforted by Dr.Thurman's words "At the end there is just you and him....just you and your memories..."etc. Also, at the end of the movie when the engine crashes through the roof he has a smile on his face, although this is a very ambiguous example, it could be interpreted as him realising there is a God and he will not die alone. Anyway, that's the best I could do, but that's the thing I love about this movie, Richard Kelly gives it so many plausible possibilities for almost every question you can ask about it. I prefer this style to the way some movies answer everything at the end as the protagonist speaks almost straight to the camera "Oh, Mr Smith was angry at his next door neighbour so he killed him, inherited his money and that's why we found the candlestick in the library explaining why Colonel Mustard...blah blah blah".
