I've come down to either two theories.
One, the whole reason Donnie experienced the Tangent universe is so god can show Donnie that he can feel love, and your parents will understand, and everything will be alright. That not everyone does die alone, because in your heart, you have those people. It is a movie about time travel, so you have to think of that episode of the simspons (I know it's also a real book, but I forget what it's called) when homer travels back in time, and changes everything just by doing little things. Frank is changing everything by his trigger effect. Donnie's relationships with his family, friends, his love. everything. So Frank is really giving Donnie all these great things. Donnie has the memories, so all that happened is real in my mind. Memories are what createst reality.
And my other thought is that Gretchen and Harry actually wanted to live, and they were trying to change that by being the manipulated dead. Yes, Gretchen is manipulated dead aswell, is says so on the site, in the Philopsphy of Time book, in the notes. So it was actually those two wanting to live. I mean, it's teenager love. plus, her and donnie were in a fight, and she was scared at that time from her step dad, so just fucked donnie. I have no doubt it was love on donnie's side tho, and maybe she would grow to love his as much as he loves her if they have had a chance to stay together, but it was too short. Frank just wanted to live, so tricked down into "killing himself".
But then again, I don't think this theory can really pan out, because then why would the world end unless donnie dies? Plus, Frank causes Donnie to do all the things, to meet gretchen, and trigger the events so they can have a party, and so without the party, he would have never run over gretchen and been killed by donnie. I read that theory on this site, but I really don't think it could follow through, also it does sound really cool. lol. So I think my first theory is better. God is saying, you have to die donnie, but before that, feel joy... in a way.
One question tho... Donnie dies, but then the world never ends, not creating a worm hole, so no jet engine, or artifact can travel back to kill donnie, so then he'd live... So how does he die? So far that's the only thing I don't have a real answer for.
