Ok, I understand what you say about the artifact not being the engine, but what if it is Donnie. He is from the primary universe. Maybe his mission was to return to the primary universe all along. Maybe someone else is guiding him there, maybe Grandma Death. Also, the fast that the engine is still there in the end of the movie means that there is still another dimension, however it can not be the same dimension as the tangent because Donnie isnt there. My theory is that there are multiple domensions which can be transcended. However, it can be seen that the engine falling is a loop in time. That part is still a little fuzzy for me.

The engine being from the wrong universe is an incorrect assumption. The rift in space/time is that the jet engine exists twice. One landed in Donnie's room, but also, the same engine is still on the plane it belongs on. There is the fundamental problem. The same item exists twice. Donnie is tasked with removing the duplicate to close the tangent. The only engine which can be forced into the wormhole is the one with the speed to travel through. The one in an FAA hangar somewhere is not capable of making it through the wormhole. Which engine is primary and which is tangent is an assumption. Obviously the tangent engine (aka artifact) is the one which can be sent through the wormhole to close the tangent universe.
