Ok, so maybe this isnt the real answer or any plausible answer at all but over the years ive only had a few casual viewings of Donnie Darko, and
only tonight have i given it a bit of critical eye. Ive only perused one or two posts
here but ive gotten the image that everyone has viewed this film tons of times and
collected inferences from tons of observations of both the movie and research from
interviews, but um, i really only watched it seriously this once, so i just wanted to
share my impressions. im not trying to necessarily offer any exciting insights, or new
info, as im sure its been heard before, but i think this is a good place to see if a
seasoned veteran can enlighten me some more, or tell me if my theory adds up in light
of other evidence. here it is for what its worth.
Ok so heres the impression i took away from the movie. It seems that Donnie
is not going into the future or back into the past at all, i suppose he merely views
his future
from the bedroom and the entire movie is just a glimpse of his mind experiencing
his potential future. I think its all
explained in the conversation that Donnie has with his science teacher.it begins as
they discuss an " alternate type of time travel", one where " seeing your future" is
in a sense a type of time travel.
Donnie indirectly reflects here his experience with " spears" that emerge
from people's chests and are the predetermined pathway of each entities passage
through time. After Donnie goes into this, his teacher responds by telling him that he
is contradicing himself. If everyone projects a predetermined trajectory, and that can
be viewed, well then you can change your destiny. " you have a choice".its not
predetermined. they also go into " worm holes" and " portals" and whatnot. So anyway,
once we get towards the end of the movie we see a plane engine falling into the
darkcloud looming over what is most likely donnie's house in the distance. this
darkcloud being a portal. there is a shot of donnie's little sister and mother on the
plane losing an engine, as we here a voice over of Donnie's teacher indirectly
reminding us of the prequisites one needs to time travel. a " a spaceship of
somekind... any metal vessel really". this explains how the engine could travel
through time. anyway, now we go back to the beginning of the movie, where we see
Donnie on his bed, laughing hysterically. just like the spears coming from peoples
chests are a sort of link to their future, this huge portal is like a link for the
future of all reality.. " god's channel" perhaps. And Donnie is exposed to it, seeing
his entire future unfold. engaging in what he referred to as an alternate time travel,
where you see your future instead of traveling there, and then given the oppurtunity
to change your destiny. it seems at this point, he chooses to change it. this time he just remains in his bed. and lets it kill him. sweet dreams Donnie Darko.
