OK NOW! everyone remember near the end of the movie were donnie is laying in bed reading and laughs? well i think that it is the first in the movies chronological order!? this works because from there he sees the future and decides what to do. For instance he looks to see what it would be like if he left his room= =loved ones die(ie: mom, sister, girlfriend) so he stays. Donnie could tell the future with "Frank" who is a worm hole kind of. With Frank donnie could choose his future, witch he chooses the lesser of the two evils.
Tell me what you think.

I just watched the dvd commentary for the millionth time and melted into the brilliance of this movie. Richard Kelly says during that scene that Donnie could be laughing for two reasons:
1) He remembers everything that happened in the tangent universe the way that you remember a dream when you first wake up, where its hazy and in pieces and eventually fades into nothingness. He is laughing because he thinks it was all just a dream, and he has nothing to fear. I personally wish this wasn't possible because it makes me sad to think that Donnie would die laughing at the absurdity of his impending death.
2) He has reached enlightenment, knowing that he will not die alone. I like to think this is the truth, but what can I say, I'm an optimist.
I'm so close to figuring it all out. I recommend that everyone looking for answers rents/buys the dvd (where you can read the philosophy of time travel and watch the commentary, which explain everything).
