Let me get this straight... he and his girl are being held at blade point.... He doesn't pull out the gun get the two assholes off of them... instead... he waits and kills someone who was obviously intoxicated and, although an idiot, ultimately not responsible for what happened to Gretchen. You can color the story with whatever window dressing you want... but when it comes right down to... the climax where everything goes down - MAKES 0 SENSE. If you want to argue this with me then go ahead... but you will never convince me that any intelligent person would have pulled the gun while he was being held like he was...

Donnie killed Frank at the end because that was what was supposed to happen. Donnie is a 'Living Receiver' as described in The Philosophy of Time Travel, and Frank is the 'Manipulated Dead', so Frank at that point had to die to be the manipulated dead so he can communicate with the living receiver and place the artifact (jet engine) from the tangent universe into the primary universe. Duh.

Safetyman, you're right, that doesn't make any sense. And the answer "it happened that way because it was supposed to" would normally be a ridiculous answer, but it works in this movie because, as discussed elsewhere on this site, the movie is very much about a "deus ex machina," a "god-machine" that manipulates and causes certain things to happen at appointed times. Peace.

Donnie wasn't able to pull the gun on them, because he was being beat up. The ending does make sense, you just have to think about it and discuss it with people who've seen the film, and read several interpretations of it on the internet. If you think the movie makes no sense, there's no point in griping about it.

I honestly think a guy could push a knife into my throat a lot faster than I could manage to reach into my sweater pocket and pull a gun out.

Donnie didn't shoot the guy beating him up because a)the guy was sat on him with a knife on his neck and b)it probably didn't occur to him. He shot Frank because he'd just killed Gretchen-Donnie's world had come to an end. When Frank got out the car and Donnie saw him he realised who Frank was and what he had to do. The whole movie leads to Donnie shooting Frank. Until that point Donnie didn't know why he had the gun (ie. why his path or 'destiny' whatever, led him to find it in his parent's room) It was only when Frank got out the car that Donnie knew he had to kill him. That was his 'destiny'.

Also I think I would probably want to kill a guy in a bunny suit if he had been following me around for the past month telling me to do shit like burning down houses, you could tell from the therapy sesion that Donnie feared Frank, and then he just ran over my girl friend. Also Frank had set it up to make Donnie kill him.
