just thinking back to the ending where Donnie's mother is distraught outside; then Gretchen and the kid wave. I've seen it said on here that perhaps the mother and Gretchen know each as some form of 'deja vu', like they were both connected to Dobbie and somehow share some connection. did Gretchen and Donnie's mum even ever meet? (fuck, i need to watch the movie again) i never saw the wave like that. When they're waving at each other, it doesnt really look like they recognise each other. Gretchen arrives and asks that little kid what's up...the mother and kid make eye contact and the kid obviously feels sad for such a loss; he seems to just try to console this woman in the limited sorts of ways that kids would know; the wave from a stranger- it's like an expression that you're not alone. Gretchen sees nothing else to do after hearing such shocking news, so blankly joins in. maybe i'm just being shallow; sayin this doesnt have any meaning at all

They didn't meet - at least from what's shown in the movie and there's even one of the deleted scenes on the DVD, where Donnie says to Elisabeth, that she shouldn't tell their parents about him having a girlfriend. However, I think that the last scene where Gretchen waves to Donnie's Mom is more a sign of connection between them - referring to the fact that each one shown during the "Mad World" scene somehow remembers what happened - and so although they haven't even met before, they both share a connection - the love for Donnie and they both know or feel this somehow. There was once a remark, that every detail in the movie has a purpose, so I doubt that it's a plain "joins the cheering crowd" scene. ...and making them share a connection makes the movie far more interesting anyway, doesn't it ;D Actually, there might even be s.th. in the commentary on the DVD about this, but haven't seen that so far

i think we may have found a flaw in this truly great film. i think what was trying to be portrayed is that the mother and gretchen have some sort of a connection(even though neither of them know what), but instead of a wave to show a connection, a conversation between about how the mother and gretchen knew each other would have pushed us off the edge of our seats where we were all probably sitting by the end of the film

It may not show it in the ending but, ive concluded that everyone who had some major event happen to them in the tangent universe, saw this in their "dream/vision" The mother and gretchens experiance was they both died therefor they saw it (same as frank, in a way). I believe that they reckonized each other from the "dream" but could not make the connection (such as names etc..)
Sonesh how is this a flaw? This was meant to leave us hanging to put the pieces together to figure out the story and it did just that.

Gretchen could smell Donnie's mom's pussy and was just trying to fan the smell away?

Gretchen could smell Donnie's mom's pussy and was just trying to fan the smell away? Totally gross! Although, definitely probable. I heard that Mrs. Darko's snatch smells like a busy fish market on a hot summer day.

I think its basically to show pathos ie Donnie's mam lost her son but Gretchen kept her life?

I think its basically to show pathos ie Donnie's mam lost her son but Gretchen kept her life? I actually think it's because of the smelly pussy. That seems to be the most logical explanation to me.
