The TU is on a loop so if he don’t time travel and die in 28 it starts over again. but if it starts again then he is going to do the exact same things he did before as well as everybody else. so it cant be a loop in the TU can only exist only if frank come back to change it and does different things until he gets it right.
If Donnie goes back in time and dies with the engine there will be 2 Donnie’s and the other one (the one on the golf course) could change the TU again and still everyone could die. Or if the TU restarts then Donnie is aware of what would happen if he didn’t die.

I have no answer to your question. When I start to think about two Donnie's and being aware of what happened in another universe I get totally lost. My logical mind won't allow me to 'go there'.
You just reminded me of something tho. Unless we have something telling us that there is something else out there, we have a hard time believing it. Donnie's mental issues come in to play here. How many times do we see people with their own reality and think that there might be something to it?
Maybe this is cuz I recently saw Evan Almighty. The idea that someone has visions and listens to them and acts on them is foreign to me yet so many people hold these beliefs.
I remember meeting up with a woman who was telling me what was going to happen to her in the near future. Let's just say that she was going to be discovered as a prophet soon and that I was one of the first to hear about it. Her vision sounded absolutely lovely. World Peace was finally going to hit this planet! I didn't know how to respond except to be happy for her happiness.
But...as I was driving away I felt exactly 100 percent happy and 100 percent sad.
So torn up because what she had said was so very hopeful but my brain was telling me how terribly crazy it really was.
Oh was she convincing...
