My theory from Watching DD is this (it may be a bit jumbled up as ive just seen it).
Everything that happens to Donnie happens for a reason, its his fate..like whenever a teacher writes anything on the board its aimed as a message to him.
the words Cellar Door pointed him to his destiny "grandma deaths house" where when Rachel plays the Piano they travel back in time (as the prof says, a time travel machine can be anything). This is also supported by the fact that Frank hasnt yet been shot by Donnie.
The movie is also based on 2 univereses, that of Fear and Love.. Donnie is in the Fear universe hence his destruction and fear of dying alone.
When he dies in the end his soul is automatically sent to the Love universe and thus saving both universes from total collapse and saving both worlds.
I also think that the people of the Fear universe know that Donnie is going to die because his sister says near the end on the phone "Frank is going to get some Beers", and his Psychiatrist tells him that unless something is done only Donnie and Frank will be left alone in the universe because Donnie is Afraid to die.
so basically I think his destiny was to go back in time and die anyway, and Donnie only realises this at the end.
He sacrifices himself to save the world of Fear, otherwise without the world of Fear..the world of Love wouldnt exist.
