Ok, a quick question thats probably been asked before... in the scene where time is going backwards... there's a quick part where Donnie and Gretchen pick a letter out of sparrows letter box addressed to him, and Sparrow is standing on the balcony. What the hell?!

Very good catch. I noticed this too. You might also noticed in the "time unraveling" scene that there is like 2 seconds of a downtown street shown(with busy cars). What those scenes mean can be anybodies guess. I'm not sure but the part with gretchen and donnie could be from donnie delivering the letter the grand ma death eariler in the day. I'm pretty sure when you get to the cellar door scene that the letter was already in the mail box.

these peices of footage in the time-going-backwards montage are peices of deleted scenes which they didnt bother to take out. Such as the cars and the downtown street is from the scene where gretchen and donnie go to the arcade.

Why this forum just posted a blank post from me is anybody's guess. Any damn way, yes, there is a deleted scene with Donnie and Gretchen in an arcade. I guess that is where the traffic scenes are from. I never noticed that before, but I did notice the Sparrow letter scene. It's too prolonged not to notice, and I just assumed that it was a sequence where Donnie delivers the letter and Roberta sees him. I do wonder if there was some kind of conversation between them at that point though. I would love to see a book detailing the writing of this movie and the script revisions, I wonder if Sparrow was not as cryptic in earlier versions. Plus there's the comment by Kelley in the commentary that the original script called for a huge time-travel ship to be above the house in the tempest. That idea fascinates me to no end, because: 1) who is operating it 2)are they or it the literal "deus ex machina" and 3) who/what are they/it? One of my friends thinks Donnie himself has built a time-machine or something, as he says to his Dr. Maybe the original script called for some kind of physical craft to travel, like Monitoff said. Anyway...
