I have a question for you guys:
All the chain of events lead to having Donnie's mother and sister in the plane... but ... why do they have to be in the plane? The plane was going to pass by at that very time anyway....
Doesnt make sense to me...
Hope somebody sheds some light...

Well, thinking about it I found an explanation myself... If they weren't in that plane his mum would be at home and therefore they couldn't have made the party.
It doesnt answer though why the engine had to fall from that very plane

Your right....not on plane = no party. And there has to be a party for Frank to wear the bunny suit, get beer, run over gretchen, get shot, etc. It has to be that plane because that particular engine is the artifact that has to be returned to the real universe by Donnie. Not just any engine, but that one. The engine that lands on the house at the beginning is this same exact engine, but its from the future, and is the signal that the tangent universe has started.

Also, as you see in the scene's with the engine falling.. it kinda turns and moves about in mid air... in one direction, suggesting Donnie is using his power to guide it into the wormhole... but this raises a good question... did Donnie rip the engine off in the first place? If so... he killed his Mum and Sister!!
