My belief is he had to die to save Gretchen and to save his sister's boyfriend, Frank. If he had not died he would have lost his girlfriend and killed his sister's boyfriend, eventually would have been imprisoned for being the only one at the scene with two bodies and perhaps having congical visits with a 6 foot tall dead bunny rabbit. I think he died to revive Gretchen and Frank from the dead region of time by sacraficing himself. Love is more important then anything and my theory of the ending is a prime example, Donnie died to save two people who were in love so they could continue life.

I like this thinking... Donnie was given a choice and his choice was surely not a selfsih one...he gave up a lot. And it wasn't for notoriety either...no one would ever know his reasons or that he even had a choice to make.
When I was watching Spiderman I just loved it for the same reason. Aunt May said to Peter Parker: "We need a hero, couragous sacrificing people, setting examples for all of us. Everybody loves a hero, people line up for 'em, cheer for them, scream their names, and years later tell how they stood in the rain for hours just to get a glimpse of the one who told them to HOLD ON a second longer. I believe theres a hero in all of us, that keeps us honest, gives us strength, makes us noble. And finally gets us to die with pride. Even though sometimes we have to be steady and give up the thing we want most, even our dreams."
