Yeah, God does feature heavily in this film, but religion does not. Everything can be explained by just watching the film (preferably the DVD) !!! Most time travel films have flaws anyway , ya know !!! You just can't cover every base , people will point there fingers regardless.
Don't get confused by people talking out their A## with all this time travel cr#p . I'm not gonna rant on about it either, all questions on that subject can be answered by watching Donnies convesations with his science teacher and reading the extracts from Roberta's book.
Don't forget this is a fantasy film some things just don't make sense sometimes. It's enough to give you a big headache reading through all these threads so just remember this one quote which I think contrasts all these complicated theories here (Eric !!!)
