uhm..well ive figured out most of the principals of timetravel after reading Sparrows book on the official page..he had to return the artfact, i figured out that much..but why did he had 2 kill himself and what did that have 2 do with the returning of the artifact? one more question..WHERE did the artifact come from in the first place? i dont recall that ever being mentioned on the official site

another question about the end!!! Firstly people seem to think there is something special about Donnie being in the car with Gretchin at the end as if it's a way for him to get back through time. Shoudn't this be irrelivant if the only vessell that needs to go through the porthole is the artifact. Like everyone else Donnie returns to October 2nd with memories of the tangent universe, I think there is reference to these images being as clear as day but they soon fade. Also it seems reasonable to think that the plane would always make contact with the porthole regardless of weather his mum and sister were on the plane? If it is as simple as Donnie has die or the universe ends, then fair enough But does he really have to? The main thing thats gets me thinking is Patricks charecter (The self help guy). I haven't got the film at hand but could someone confirm roughly the day he is arrested for child porn. Was he going to kill himself on the 12th anyway (see offical site) and did him getting a hard time from Donnie (no pun intended) somehow prevent this from happening , namely him getting arrested. Or since his house was said to empty of all possesions, Meaning he tried to cover up the porn ,meaning he could have had memories of the tangent reality , otherwise the suicide makes no sense. If he did have faint images of the tangent reality then everyone else would have the same and would've acted differently thus making it a different reality so Donnie wouldn't be in a loop had he chosen to get out of the way of the engine again. Hope you can kinda see where I'm getting at ,but I don't mind if I'm completely wrong!!

Jimerino, Nothing really says that Donnie and Gretchen being together was his way of getting through (back) time. Its just that his only time of getting back was when the artifact opens the portal or worm-hole. The artifact being the plane engine. And about Jim Cunningham ( I think that was his name ). I know alot about this movie but the only thing I dont understand about this movie is when all the characters wake up and are laying around, I think that since they have some kind of connection that somehow they have some idea about what Donnie did OR they knew what was going to happen if he didnt die. Jim was very bothered by what he saw and felt so guilty that he killed himself. There was no one that knew about it so he couldnt be arrested without Donnie

yeah, so it does suggest that once the portal was closed things weren't repeating themselves and people would've acted differently. And unless richard kelly has said otherwise, Donnies' mum and sister don't die in the plane. At one of the end shots you can see them being greeted home by the dad and older sister + a 747 should be able to run on three engines! But had Donnie chose to dodge the engine a second time then i don't think there is any reason why things would have turned out that bad for him. If people were acting differently because of memories of the tangent universe then he would'nt be straying from gods path. Jims suicide shows that things were different and very posible that donnies future had not been written, that there was a new path!

Maybe this new path was already pre-determined and God already knew that after he put Donnie through that, that everyone would act differently...so therefore pre-determined

Chels, 1) Please dont go all Religious on this, and 2) i dont think god had anything to do with it, the basic is Time travel and to put it into the hands of a deity would be.....i dont want to say "wrong" or "absurd" but, i guess frustrating at the most, did Donnie even believe in god? or was he merly questioning him?

Religion has to be brought into it Donna, it's a major theme in the movie. I'm not religious myself though. We don't conclusively learn Donnie's standpoint on the existence of God, we know that he's agnostic in the beginning. I'm not sure exactly whether 'God' had anything to do with the time travelling and portals etc, but I think it would be kind of pointless for R.Kelly to throw in all these religious symbols, metaphors etc in an attempt to emphasise time travel. It wouldn't make sense to me.

Yeah Donna, I'm afraid religion plays a significant part in R Kellys vision for the movie.I now own the DVD and have seen the cuts scences etc.. Richard Kellys explanations for the film are 1: it was all a dream and at the end of the film Donnie is so happy that he has woken from it. 2: It was plain and simple an act of god . He also mentions that he intended for it to be a film open to interpritation, which is why these message boards exsist.
My personal view is pretty much the same as before. I'm not sure if Donnie choosing to die is the issue that i wanna talk about at the moment, but that after the secondary reality is closed Jim's suicide shows that it wouldn't have been a repeat of the 28 days.It doesn't matter if it was Gods plan or not,the world played out differently second time around regardless of Donnies death. well whos knows what it would be like if Donnie lived? It's ok to take this film to heart , I have and i'm so grateful that I have, and I love hearing peoples opinions on the film, but from hearing what R Kelly has to say,it does have a strong religious theme and it seems to work that science and religion go together so well in this film. All in all though it really is a comic book story,Donnie is intened to be a super hero with super hero powers to match,he saves the world for one thing, and if you disagree about him being a super hero, then let me know " What makes you think he's not!!!"

Excuse me eric, but who died (besides donnie) and made you king of time travel theory? This is a movie we're all talkin bout..........with the ground rules set by the philosophy of time travel book. Now anything assumed outside of that isnt right nor wrong so dont preach answers to people saying you'll gladly explain to them whats going on.

Also, richard kelly said that this is a paradoxical time travel movie, meaning not everything has to follow one line of thinking. Therefore i dont even have to read your attempt at explaining it because if its a paradox then things do not have to follow thru.
