can someone explain why greatchen, that little kid, and DD's mom wave at the end?

i think greatchen waved cuz she felt sad that someone died so she waved at DD's mom to be polite and then the boy waved then the mom waved back to them

I have an incling which tells me that Gretchen waves because she remembers DD's mum from her dreams of the Tangent Universe... his familiarity possesses her to wave and the mum (having the same dreams) reciprocate's those feelings.
The boy waves because the mum waved and he didn't know what else to do (type of thing).... not sure the boy holds any significance.
