Indeed they did...one of the biggest problems with the directors cut I agree, i wasn't too fond of the change, although, the new eyes shots and extra visual things (added ocean waves and full screen grid at the end) were more of a problem for me...

Indeed they did...one of the biggest problems with the directors cut Given how important song lyrics are to Donnie Darko -- the movie really is operatic in the sense that Kelly hand-selected songs whose lyrics practically narrate the events on-screen -- I think the change actually makes brilliant sense. I love "Killing Moon" as a song, and I love it as a song in a movie, and I love it as a song in Donnie Darko, but I have to say I see (and appreciate, and like) the logic of changing it out. The lyrics for "Never Tear Us Apart" are just too eerily aligned with the movie's message to skip it, original version or no.

The music sequencing was ruined in the Director's cut. When "Under The Milkyway" plays when Donnie and Gretchen comes the stairs........Just beautiful

I was horrified when Killing Moon was replaced in the opening. Aside from the fact that it's a much better song, I thought it set the mood perfectly - a dark mood.
Also the Liquid Spear Waltz is gone - tragically. Very disappointed in the DC music changes. And the eye shots - wtf? What's with the lines of computer code - that looks ridiculous.
One of the best things about the original DD was the tension that develops in the viewer when trying to decide whether Donnie is hallucinating or mentally disturbed or if these things (seeing Frank) are really happening, and then, what do they mean.
I loved about DD was that I couldn't tell what kind of movie it was - horror/sci-fi/teen/black comedy.
Is Frank evil? He sure looks it at first. It's not clear in the original whether Donnie floods the school (and that's good!!!)
I'm sorry. Ambiguity makes for a much better movie.

I'm sorry. Ambiguity makes for a much better movie. To you, it does. Presumably to Kelly, a clearer depiction of his vision is more satisfying. I love the theatrical release, too. But I just can't help feeling like those of us who purport to be such big fans of the movie ought to be a little more open minded about the changes -- after all, this is the same writer/director we hailed as brilliant for the first cut.
