I thought I'd post some trivia about Joy Division, and Richard Kelly's poignant use of their tune for Donnie Darko:
Ian Curtis, the singer in Joy Division had always suffered heavily from depression, his release was his music ...
His tune, 'Love will Tear us Apart' was a huge indy hit here in the U.K. in the early 80's, in fact it was the success of this tune that was responsible for the organisation of Joy Division's first U.S. tour.
Tragically, Ian lost his private battle with mental health problems and hung himself at the very threshhold of success for himself and his band, before he could go to the States. 'Love will Tear us Apart' was high in the U.K. music charts at the time. No one has ever known exactly why and what drove him to it, though there are loads of theorys from obssesive fans who Ian's music touched deeply..was he scared of success?... was this tune his suicide note? ... not unlike Donnie Darko, we'll never know for sure... it's a mad world.
