okay guys i'm digging this up since the DC is now released on our side of the big lake!
i really really really disagree with the opening track.
it's a great song and all... but i just don't feel that it fits with the mood or rythm of the opening sequence at all.
that's the only thing i have to say that bothers me about the DC.

I'm genuinely surprised that otherwise open people are so adamant that the music should not have been changed in the DC. While I have some strong feelings about the music as a listener (that is, I do like "Killing Moon" better than "Never Tear Us Apart"), I really do understand and even agree with the change as a watcher.
Kelly meant for the movie to be operatic, for the songs -- their sound and especially their lyrics -- to nearly narrate the movie. And it works, just about everywhere. However, the lyrics to "Never Tear Us Apart" are practically a synopsis of the movie as we understand it. From a movie structure perspective, I submit that whether we like one song better than another is moot. What matters is "Never Tear Us Apart" is a far better fit lyrically in the context of what Kelly was trying to do.
Again, I'm not arguing taste, because I also like "Killing Moon" better in a, "oh, cool, this song just came on my Launchcast.com station" way. And I also understand that we're all familiar with the original opening, and we tend to like what we know first. My angle here is to argue that the change makes sense in the artistic context.

When I saw the Director's Cut and they took The Church - Under The Milky Way song out of the scene when Donnie and Gretchen walk down the stairs I was so disapointed, that was perfect how it was. I only watch the original personally.

Does anybody have the U2 song that was originally supposed to be played at the end?

Here are the lyrics to "Never Tear Us Apart." The third stanza absolutely gives me chills (I told you/That we could fly...); it's practically synonymous with "why are you wearing that stupid man suit?"
Don’t ask me What you know is true Don’t have to tell you I love your precious heart
I I was standing You were there Two worlds collided And they could never tear us apart
We could live For a thousand years But if I hurt you I’d make wine from your tears
I told you That we could fly ’cause we all have wings But some of us don’t know why
I I was standing You were there Two worlds collided And they could never ever tear us apart

Where exactly in the film is the song "STAY' from Oingo Boingo?

That song; "Stay" by Oingo Boingo, is featured only very briefly (and only in DC). It is in the scene where Donnie talks to his sister in the kitchen when she's received her acceptance letter from Harvard. Plays on the radio in the background.
Just to let you know, there is a song (in the original cut and the DC), that is not mentioned much at all - though it has been mentioned on this board at least once. "Voices Carry" by 'Til Tuesday. 1980's one-hit wonder kinda song I think. BTW, here's my custom Donnie Darko soundtrack list (granted that not all of you would include dialogue snippets - but I'm a QT fan, so...):
01 - Michael Andrews - Carpathian Ridge 02 - INXS - Never Tear Us Apart 03 - 'Til Tuesday - Voices Carry 04 - "Wake up"

I believe that the version used in the film is actually Pantera's version, if not very similar to it. Everyone uses that version, though I'm not entirely sure if they are the same.

I just assumed there is no Dead Green Mummies version -- this seems to be one of those Easter eggs (the song is credited to the Mummies in the credits, after all) trolls claim to have seen/used/downloaded, but which never existed.
The only versions of the song "Proud to be Loud" I've ever seen have been by Pantera. Would be interested to know if anyone has any more information or history on the topic ...
