Now here's an odd theory, which I hope someone will swat down (reasonably, with some sense for storytelling)...
according to the website, the physics teacher mails a copy of A Philosophy of Time to a librarian, called Elizabeth. Could this be the Elizabeth, probably married, who was the sister of Donnie?
Notice how the photo of Ms. Roberta Sparrow resembles Donnie's sister. Perhaps Elizabeth manipulates time so that she can go back and make sure that her brother will get the book, knowing that he will write her a letter. This doesn't explain how a nun would become a science teacher, but maybe she's able to assume the identity of another just to make sure that the book will be passed on.
Perhaps she would go to such heroic efforts just to have the adventure of travelling to a different point in time, and her motives are simply to pass this on to someone she loves and trusts as well.
