Ok first off I just wanna say this is a grrrrrrreat message board thing. I understand the movie so much better now after reading all your comments. The first time I watched it I had no idea that the movie was even half as profound as I have now learned that it is.
Anyway I still have some questions...
First of all, why is Roberta Sparrow always checking her mailbox? Is it just to see if she really is going to die alone, or what?
Why is it Frank, of all the other characters, that is the one to show Donnie what he needs to know regarding closing the portal and ending the tangent universe and what not?
And Darkmystic, why can't there be a comparison between Christ and Donnie with Donnie dying to sacrifice himself to close the portal so that everyone else can live and so that the world won't end? Why would this not be logical when there are so many hints of it put in the movie like the deleted scenes when Donnie is on a crucifix and the poem Donnie reads in class about him saving the children?
So...if anyone could answer these questions, that would be great. And I'm still figuring the movie out and haven't gotten a chance to hear the commentary or see ALL of the deleted scenes because I just ordered the movie and haven't gotten it yet. I just rented it last week and that was the first time I saw it. And so I don't know how to correctly word all of my questions either, so hopefully they're understandable!

At the part where Donnie asks about Frank's name in the Cinema, right? Frank goes: like my father and his father etc.
Is Frank's last name ever mentioned? Maybe his father was Frankie Fiedler that Donnie's old man is talking about in the hotel room.
Any suggestions?

Erica, My take on the Christ theme: The deleted scene shows Donnie impaled by a piece of the plane engine in his room after the crash. Those who see this as a crucifix image are very loosely interpreting the scene. His hands are by his side, not up, there are no wounds on his hands or feet etc. I can agree with a vague resemblance since he is slightly propped by the engine piece. Anyway, its not that there can't be a comparison, as much as it simply doesn't fit with the story. Donnie does not have to die to save the world. He has to kill some people (Gretchen, Frank, His mother, sister), but he himself does not have to die. Richard Kelley says that the tangent universe is closed and hence unwinds itself. A much more interesting and fitting Christ comparison would be Frank. After all he really does have to sacrifice himself to save the world. He basically manipulates Donnie into a series of events which lead to his own death so the portal can be closed. Also, the poem Donnie reads in class is mostly Frank of Franks voice. "I will deliver the children..." is Frank saying he will deliver the children. It fits with the theme of divine intervention since Frank is the mouthpiece of God. Justanothername: I had also considered that Frankie Fieldler was Franks dad. Of course he died at prom and would have only been 18 or so, but its possible. Roberta Sparrow: She knows she is the only person who can guide whoever is chosen to close the portal should a tangent universe come to pass. She's also a bit senile which is why she keeps checking over and over. Why Frank?: Well this part is a bit difficult to follow. Frank is Manipulated dead, and is therefore immensely powerful because he died in a tangent universe. The fact the he dies in the future is not relevant...he is essentially a ghost from the future. The wierd part is that Frank is only this powerful because Donnies kills him, which is why Frank manipulates Donnie into killing him. So essentially Frank has Donnie kill him so he can go back and have Donnie kill him, so he can go back and....well you get the idea. Hope that helped.

actually, if you read "the Philosophy of Time Travel," at the very end under the "notes" section, you'll see Frank's name under the "manipulated dead" and his last name is Anderson!

actually, if you read "the Philosophy of Time Travel," at the very end under the "notes" section, you'll see Frank's name under the "manipulated dead" and his last name is Anderson! but it IS in paretheses if I remember correctly....and again POTT isnt the only explanation

granted.....but the reason we are able to read POTT is to help understand the movie. and seeing how Frank's last name does not appear anywhere else, it can only be assumed that it is indeed Anderson. when one adds parentheses to a phrase or word, it is to add clearity and understanding without actually altering its meaning in the context of which it was written.

Frank Fiedler was not Frank Anderson's dad. If you listen to the director/Jake commentary, director Richard Kelly clearly states that Rose and Eddie Darko are just one of the manipulated living, and this is just another thing that is going on in the back of their minds, "always a step behind [Donnie]". Kelly says this Fiedler was just another Frank, another reference to the Frank name, another part of the manipulated living's connection to what is really going on.

Sparrow is looking for mail from people reading her book. The Manipulated Dead Frank is sent from God. It's the only logical explanation. He is dead after all.

The random fat guy, why is he in this movie, what role does he play in the story, right now I just think hes funny but why is he there, one reason maybe to prevent Donnie and Grechen to kiss before there surpose to? But then why is he standing outside of his house at the party? Does he follow Grechen or Donnie?

He's one of the FAA investigators that removes the engine from Donnie's house (He's wearing a suit at the time!) - he's spying on Donnie and his family to see if there is some explanation for the mystery engine...

Well - it's a mystery! They don't have clue 1 and being the paranoid feds they are they covered very base - including the "victim" : Donnie. Perhaps they thought it could be an elaborate hoax?
