hay im new on here but have been scanning for about two weeks. anyway, i dont understand why the characters start to cry at the end (well i get cunningham) but why is frank and mrs farmer soing the shocked thing? are they remembering things in the tangent universe? also, why does monnetoff look at karen pomeroy and go "donnie darko" chuckle and then she says "i know!"
i thought they were the manipulated living, but this suggested that they knew what donnies job was and were supprised that he was chosen. i read someone thought monnitoff was an angel type character, thus the line about not being able to answer donnies question on god as he could "loose his job" or is that just as hes in a catholic school.

Why do they cry at the end?
What I found important here was that, given the fact of death, a fact we all must face, we can choose to embrace hope or despair. Donnie isn't so much making the best of a bad situation or worse giving up. Instead he has figured out the answer to the question of meaning, meaning comes from following the path of love, trusting that our actions matter.
As the characters at the end of the film awake from their perceived bad dream it's pretty clear that they've all been given a glance at where they might be heading, they've all been challenged to wake from their despair as it were.
The Dreams chapter in The Philosophy of Time Travel confirms this...
"When the Manipulated awakens from their Journey into the Tangent Universe, they are often haunted by the experience in their dreams. Many of them will not remember. ....Those who do remember the Journey are often overcome with profound remorse for the regretful actions buried within their Dreams, the only physical evidence buried within the Artifact itself, all that remains from the lost world."
Why couldn't Dr. Monnitoff answer the question?
We've discussed this before on the board but it was of popular belief that he couldn't answer the question because he was indeed a teacher at a private catholic school and was inhibited from inserting his personal view.
Why does Ms. Pomeroy and Dr. Monnitoff have the conversation "Donnie Darko"... "I know"?
Richard Kelly (the director) states in the DVD commentary that they are being manipulated and they are aware of Donnie and that something is going on with him.

what is the significance as to who is included/excluded during the "Mad World" awakening sequence? seems like a roll call of ML/MD, except for the absence of Gretchen and the inclusion of Cherita Chin, a relatively minor character.

I couldn't agree more with twinkle's question. Can anyone help us out here? One question does have me vexed, however (and call me stupid if it pleases you). What was the siginificance of Donnie and Cherita's conversation in the hallway when she accidentally drops her notebook?

What was the siginificance of Donnie and Cherita's conversation in the hallway when she accidentally drops her notebook? I'm not certain about this, but I think they are all crying either because they remember the tangent universe and know it will end, or they are aware of what Donnie is doing for everyone? As for the scene between Donnie and Cherita, I'm not sure. I thought that it was just because she likes him, but there probably is a deeper meaning.

I thought that Donnie recognised Cherita as someone to be saved, his actions would make her life better. Although i was confused by her dance and the Sparkle Motion performance. Can somebody explain it to me please?

Donnie Darko is a conplex movie with many analogies. I graduated high school in 2006, that year or the year before I wrote a 17 page paper on the subject. Most of it has to do with the symbolism between Donnie and Jesus Christ.
Much later the director hinted and Donnie being a Messiah figure.
I really wish I had a copy of that paper. I just showed some ppl the movie for the first time n I could explain n recall a lot but Im sure my analysis is lacking now.
