the part where donnie and his dad are driving near the beginning of the movie donnie ask where the jet engine came from and his dad says "something about a matching serial number that got burned" soo what does that mean? if the jet engine came from the future how would they even know that.

Well, it would have had a serial number, being from the future or not, but it being burnt off stops the FBI and Donnie himself from realizing where it can from.

Mind you Donnie's dad would only be reporting what he was told by the authorities - it sounds like the FAA/MIBs evading the issue - acid etching would probably be able to recover a "burned off" serial number...

on the website at the end of level 3 there is a phone recording of a FAA and another guy talkin about the serial number on the jet engine the FAA sent them in 91 or 92 (i can't remember exactly which one).... so they either lied about the serial number being burnt off or they simply found it by something like acid etching
