Okay, I realize that this movie has a lot of levels, and after going to donniedarko.com I found levels I'd never seen before. But the main message I got out of Donnie Darko was simple. It answers the main question that people have about God. Why do things happen how they do? … Donnie's mom was probably asking this as she smoked her cigerette at the end; "Why did God take away my son?" Donnie realized as the final song was playing (the beautiful song that says 'the dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had') that he was happy to go along with God's plan, even to the point of death. … Donnie got to see what would have happened if he had lived, if he had gotten his way, but we don't get that option. We just have to play with the cards we've been delt, but we hate God for it because we think He is cheating us out of a better life. But the truth is, God is dealing us the best cards possible. He knows what we need, and he knows where we are headed. He is doing everything He can in our circumstances for our well being, but leaving the ultimate choices to our fate in our hands.

I think it stands to debate, if you will, our perception of "god", and choices, and fate
