I really do not understand why this is a good movie. All the layers for me seems more like borrowing from other movies, artist & history, etc (clockwork orange, twilight zone, bible) with supporting lyrics (from good songs). All well chosen, I must say, but I really don't understand the hype about the movie.
Is it because it has such an open ending that everyone can drift off in different directions and proclaim it as the truth? Is it the basic psychology which gives you things too think about? Is it because the DVD and website gives you the change too "find" an answer?
Is it because we have too find an naswer for everything (because the director wants you too)?
Sorry, but please tell me what it is about this movie?

A very good question... but as the advert goes "Its all in the blend" This is a brilliant movie thanks to many things, such as a good script, thought provoking actions... and an ending that you KNOW has to be clever... but you just don't wanna say anything in case you end up looking stupid For me I guess the main thing that makes me think about it after i've seen it would be a different thing to what makes it a good film. I thought about it after it ended because a) it was bloody confusing and b) because it was just so tragic. I mean, there's Donnie... he's happy, he's finally found someone he likes.. and then what he thinks is the worst thing possible happens - she dies. Then he shoots a guy, and then it dawns that THAT was Frank.. and then he goes back and.. wait, its OK... everyones fine... but just to really make sure everything is nice a shit for him... they go and make it so that he had never even MET Gretchen... and she didn't even know who he was... and then they kill him... and his Dad was so fucking cool... they can't just DO that to his Dad god damn them. Right, thats it... thats my lecture done... it's just that I really REALLY HATE unhappy endings... except this is the exception... I can't get myself to hate this ending... cos it was too good. GODDAMMIT!! I'm never gonna get over this film

Did you ever pause to think that a good movie is a movie that lets you ask all those questions. A lesser movie leaves all the questions answered....who would see that movie a 2nd, 3rd....100th time?

I agree with the last post. I believe it was meant to raise more questions than give answers. And tragic, oh so tragic.
