Gretchen, It's been years since I read The Talisman. I think I have forgotten a lot. (except for Wolf! Wolf!) Do you think I need to re-read it before I read The Black House? Omni, So are you saying that the character was actually realistic psychologically speaking? From everything you guys are saying about it I think "American Psycho" would be extremely scary.
You wrote: "yet, I think that not to appreciate the psychological acuity that Ellis so pointedly possesses would be a shame". I see that I might like this book but after reading it do you think I would still be able to leave the house!!?? I am definitely intrigued.

If you look at the history of human kind and all the atrocities committed I think it would be foolish to not think somebody like Patrick Bateman (to a certain degree) isn't out there. I can't speak for everybody but I'm not easily moved unless it's in the physical, but as a woman you may react different. After all like I aforementioned a few girls I know were totally disgusted and didn't even finish the book. If you decide to read it don't get discouraged by the first few chapters, it takes a while but once it started going I couldn't put it down and the part about the cab driver (I won't go into detail because it will obviously ruin the book for you) had me reading at the speed of light because I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen.

I figure if I can read Pahlaniuk I can read just about everything. Did you ever read the story Guts by him? I think it appeared in Playboy. Someone made a copy for me cuz they knew I liked him.
Ted Bundy was surely for real. Had a lot of people fooled, including true crime author who worked alongside him at the Seattle Suicide and Crisis Hotline. Like Providence I have a whole bunch of books waiting on my shelf to be read. I think I will have to add this one. I am not going to see the movie since I plan on reading the story but just out of curiousity... did they do a good job? Going through the ads today I saw Best Buy has it for 14.99.

Anyone have an electronic copy of "Guts" I can view -- or know a book in which it was collected I can buy?

Never mind -- I searched for "Guts" online and discovered that I have read it. In fact, it's one of 20-some short stories that are interwoven in CP's latest novel, Haunted. If you liked this one, you'll love the others and that book in general. Run, don't walk, to the bookstore and pick up a copy!

Do you think I need to re-read it before I read The Black House? certainly not. i actually read black house BEFORE the talisman. both books stand well on their own. it's not required to read the talisman to understand and enjoy black house, but it is an interesting addition. that's also one of my favorite things about reading stephen king, the majority of his works are linked to eachother in some way.

Well that definitely helps. I do have The Black House sitting on my shelf already but I wasn't sure if I needed to re-read The Talisman. If you love Stephen King (I do too) I think you will really love Robert McCammon. I would start with Swan Song, my all time favorite. Boy's Life, which is more of a coming of age story with some social commentary about racism, is awesome. Heck the intro alone is worth savoring. For a while when I was reading McCammon I thought it was Stephen King with yet another pseudonym aka Richard Bachman. But McCammon who lives in Alabama writes more about the south as opposed to King and his New England connections. I grow to love McCammon more and more. He really describes things so well. His research is 'spot on' when he adds historical references. (I guess I should stop now)

For those who might be interested in McCammon -- particularly those who, like me, have a zombie fetish (Gretch, I'm looking at you) -- here's a "taste" of his writing you'll enjoy: www.robertmccammon.com/fiction/eat-me.html

oooooooh... okay, you've swayed me. i'm STILL finishing book 7 however (put it down for a few months... i'm just really reluctant to end it all) but when that's done i might have to check out mccammon, since i've read most all of king's (and bachman's) other works.
eat me. ha, i love it.

McCammon has a book of short stories called Blue World. My favorite short story in that book is Chico. A movie based on the short story Blue World is hopefully in the making. Gretchen, you will have to let us know what you think!

Brief update: I just finished Survivor, and it was everything I'd hoped out of Palahniuk -- smart, raw, hilarious, intriguing.
I'm now temporarily off CP and reading Haddon's the curious incident of the dog in the night-time. So far, brilliant.

I was this close *holds fingers really close together* to performing that book at a national tournament for speech.
Oh, and I'm talking about night-time.
